My understanding is that Valley Parade was an area which was previously quarried. That the land was bought by the Midland Railway and converted into a ground in the 1880’s.
I may well be wrong here, but I am sure that l was told that a lot of ash (from the locomotives) was deposited in the hole created by the quarry.
When the Leitch Stand was built in 1908, the weight of the structure was such, that it needed substantial concrete blocks sunk into the quarry, to stop the new stand suffering from subsidence or slippage.
The land had stability problems, in particular the Midland Road stand area, and in the late 1940’s its capacity was reduced, until it was sold off to Berwick Rangers. I am sure some on here will remember it as an open section of the ground, until the Chicken Shed was opened in the mid 1960’s.
I guess John Dewhirst would know more about the subject than most.

Don’t forget the spring than runs/ ran deep underneath the half way line . Its exit to the old mill dam at the other side of midland rd can easily be seen on old Ariel photos . We used to “ frog” in the exit stream as kids.

There was apparently a Holy Well, hence the name.

l would think that these factors would mean that without extensive and very costly ground/foundation work, the stadium area would be difficult to use for many other building projects, other than lightweight factory/distribution units.
Far from ideal, but in one of the hilliest City’s, then there are limited options for an alternative stadium, other than going to another quarry in south Bradford!
One cancelled game, due to a flooded pitch, in over 5 years is not that bad.

Stop using league 2 as your narrative. We have aspirations way above this level and so if we were a championship club ours would have been the only game off.

Can you give me this weeks lottery numbers, seeing as you have a crystal ball.
How do you know , the game would have been off, if we were in the championship.
Being higher up the pyramid, the clubs income would be far greater and thus so may be the investment in the playing surface, which actually is not that bad.

If we had been in the Sunday league we wouldn’t have been playing so it would be ok

As others have said, let it go Loyal. After your initial bad mouthing of the Club I asked you to say how many fixtures have been postponed since the drainage work in 2018, you didn't answer but others have, answer zero. You might like to research how many games have been off at Accy and Rochdale in the recent period since they installed new pitches and drainage, you may be surprised to know the answer is more than at VP.
I'm not a weather man but I have good geographic knowledge and I was responsible for construction all over the country and have seen massive localised differences in climate / weather.
Look at last week alone. On Monday we had heavy rain after the frosts, I didn't give the Liverpool game a chance and yet the rain stopped, covers were removed and water cleared from 6.00 a.m. and the result was a great playing surface which drew compliments from Liverpool. Contrast that with Accy's L2 game called off after the next wave of rain hit late in the day on Tuesday when the next named storm hit.
Now move to Saturday, the bad weather moved East leaving Accy rain free, match on but then hit us, match off. These rainfalls were extremely heavy and very local, for example Rochdale and Radcliffe game off, Oldham and Hyde on, all within a few miles. Accy has the benefit sometimes of being in the Pennines rain shadow where subject to wind direction, rain is dumped the other side of the hill, i.e Rochdale whilst such as Accy, Blackburn and Burnley escape the worst.
Suggest you also read GA in today's T&A for a more level appraisal.
I've had enough of this now but a friendly word of advice, my friend. Don't be so quick with the vitriol unless you've done the research.

So what’s your suggested remedy? Move grounds? Spend multi millions on completely excavating the ground and possibly remodelling the foundations to the Midland Road stand to fit drainage pipes? And please do tell where the money would be coming from, in L2, do do either.

From memory we haven't had many games postponed in the last few years. And i can usually tell how bad the local weather is by where my house leaks in water, Saturday was a prime example of just how much rain this area had seen. Just one of those annoying factors of life that mother nature can throw a spanner in the works when she wants.

Exactly. The first postponement, in exceptional conditions, since the drainage was improved in 2018.
It was very annoying, especially as I’m going to miss the next two home games due to being away for Christmas. But it’s just one of those things.

For the record there has been no vitriol or bad mouthing, just a general observation that as a perceived ‘big club’ we have games called off when 90% of all other EFL clubs are ok.
But I’ll leave it now until the next time…..

I don’t think I ever said I had a solution. I’m merely questioning why our games are almost always called off during inclement weather when most others are not and whether we think that’s just something we have to accept.
If it’s because of the foundations and no amount of money can fix the problem then at least we know. I’ll make other plans if it rains heavily.

Because as the name suggests the ground is in a valley so water drains down and it’s built on a site with poor natural drainage. It would cost millions to remedy but how many waterlogged games to we suffer

They aren't . As Steve pointed out I think it was 3 or 4 years ago since we last had a game called off and in that time there has been countless times when weather has affected the sporting calendar. It's annoying that the game on Saturday was called off but fact is we are no worse than any other club when the weather turns. It's just part of life, unless you can come up with a way to stop the rain from falling from the sky?

I'm not sure how long ago it was I believe we were playing Barnsley in the Papa John Trophy as we were sat in the lower Sunwin, the heavens opened and the rain was coming off the Sunwin roof like the Niagara Falls, needless to say the match was postponed, but I can't remember when a game at Valley Parade was called off in the past because of rain.

Yes I was going to quote the “ Well” . All things considering, location, strata etc , the one postponement in 5 years takes some doing . It supports entirely the work @wetherbywhaler@wetherbywhaler highlighted earlier in the thread . A fuss about torrential rain once in a blue moon is pretty silly. Yes it’s annoying any game is postponed but life is more important …sometimes;).

Since the last lot of pitch work took place our playing surface as improved no end.
We don't have the luxury of a retractable roof or even under soil heating so it is what it is.
Shame we can't control the weather that would solve a multitude of issues but there again we have all on keeping a manager in place during One season let alone Four.

Because we had more rainfall than them ?

People blaming the club because one game in four years is called off due to a waterlogged pitch really should get out more, its pathetic. Stop playing the victim and get on with life.
