If tax income drops off a cliff then savings will have to be made and pensions and other benefits may be reduced

And all the promises made to build more hospitals and put more police on streets. Where is the money coming from after they’ve just spunked billions on the furlough scheme which has been massively abused by some employers who are still operating BAU.

 

My advice to any company wouldn't the to cut ad spend it would be to vastly increase plus I would increase your sales force.

Money will need to be generated quickly and I suggest increasing digital presence also.

You only have to look at all the supermarkets at the minute spending more on ad when they is a lockdown.

Those that cut their marketing and sales spend will struggle massively. Companies will have to be quick out of the blocks when businesses start or they will go out of business quickly.

Most businesses will get scared though and cut and spend then jobs will fall.

 

Benefits will never be reduced but some may be frozen from annual increases to reduce the overall benefit spend as happened after the financial crash and austerity was introduced.
I expect it to take many years to repair the damage done and freezing benefits to sort it out will be counterproductive IMO.

 

And if the younger generation can’t work and pay in then where does their pension pot come from?
Face facts, we need to get back to work and cannot be locked down indefinitely until this virus has gone.

 

Never said it was a gift to the elderly. You receive your calculated state pension based on your contributions over your working life plus any additional pensions earned. Its quite right you draw from all that work for the rest of your life regardless of any current financial problems.

If that figure isn't enough to live on the Pension Credit could be considered.

 

We will recover from this. Yes there will be hardship for most people including us who brought our families up with at the outset spiralling inflation then huge rates of interest on our mortgages and now afte a lifetime of hard work almost zero interest on our savings. So you won’t be alone

 

If the tax take is lower than expected then peripheral services will be at risk. State benefits and the NHS are the top drawings from the tax take and will always be covered. Don't worry yourself unduly.

 

We might not recover at all from this if businesses are not open soon.

 

it isn’t funded by paying in for 50 years. A majority of it comes from tax and NI paid in that year. It isn’t like a personal pension where your payments are invested. The money coming in now is paying the pensions due now

 

Not our problem that the money has been used for other things we paid in and we are getting OUR money back and in the case of the 1950s who were robbed of five years pension without even a letter setting it out and in the second increase in some case a extra 2..5 years with less than a years notice

 

I think he meant the pension was EARNT through 50 years of contributions.
We really do need to stop bickering at this tragic period. Yes the economy and people's financial well being does need the lifting of restrictions as soon as is safely possible. Also the health and survival of everyone is of paramount importance, regardless of their age.
On a lighter note I am hoping my local reopens sooner rather than later. I am more than happy to practice social distancing in the beer garden now that the weather is picking up.

It could have been EARNED but if there is no cash in the pot due to no tax income it doesn’t really matter. Ask those women who lost out due to changes after they had paid in.
