I think the numbers are great for context and it's an excellent point.

They aren't risking drowning their kids to get from another safe country to get into Germany. There must be some sort of pull to get here to justify that action.

I've no idea why so many would risk their lives to get to the UK when other countries appear to be more welcoming. They're bonkers imo. One suggestion which has been made is that the illegals find it easier to find work in the UK's black economy with unscrupulous employers. Yes, every country has a black economy but those countries who have some kind of national ID system - France, Germany, Belgium etc - find it easier to identify the illegals and take a much harder line with employers who employ illegals.

But the reality remains that far more asylum seekers both in absolute numbers and relative numbers seek asylum in countries other than the UK. And still posters on here continue with the myth that most if not all asylum seekers arrive in the UK. It's just not true despite what the Express and the Sun might say. The facts are simply ignored because they don't fit well with our prejudices.

I haven't seen anything about most of the asylum seekers coming here on this thread but I haven't read it thoroughly cos the benefits bit bores me.

If they're coming over here specifically because it's easier to undertake illegal activity I can understand why people are perturbed though. Not only is that economic migration but its also illegal economic migration rather than seeking asylum from horrors in other countries.

Agree. Roughly half of all asylum applications are refused.

Where they go after that seems to be an issue when the detention centres get full.

Deportation becomes much harder if you don't know where they are.

Successful asylum applications automatically get a national insurance number to allow them to work, register with a doctor, get a bank account, claim benefits such as child benefit, child tax credits etc.

This is in reply to questions asked in the House Of Commons with regards the stabbings in Glasgow by the asylum seeker Badreddin Abadlla Adam who came over from Sudan to the UK six months earlier, not Farage's comments although he did look into Serco's handling of asylum seekers taking over hotels in various parts of the country and block booking them until the end of the year.
Details are from the Chris Phillips Home Office Minister, we have many of our young and ex-squaddies sleeping rough on the street, guys who would have given their lives for Queen and Country who we can't house, I't a disgrace.

The asylum seekers took over no hotels at all. They were put there by the government.

In 2018, at least 20,000 people were granted asylum in the UK, including resettled people. This is around half the number granted in 2001 – at least 48,000 –the year with the most grants in recent decades.

taken from the house of commons website. if half the number of people were granted asylum as were in 2001, how is the problem getting worse?

What a load of typical civil service rubbish, Full of "estimates" "possibles" " Maybes " 2018 they say "roughly" 30,000 asylum applications yet had nearly 90,000 cases in progress and were paying 44,000 weekly allowances, The truth is this is mostly guesses, They have no idea,

The point is not how many get granted asylum but how many come to the UK in search of asylum, asylum I believe is granted by the first safe country they enter many have come through several EU countries to try and get into the UK they have certainly had chance to claim asylum in France as these dinghies with asylum seekers are coming from France, who although it can be looked at as slave trafficking do little about it, as many may finish up in factories that don't pay the going rate or car washes ETC.
Watch the first video I think its self explanatory why they try and get to the UK and when they do not get it granted they appeal against the ruling or just vanish into the black economy.

Serco are making plenty of money from it, I believe a figure of £2 billion over 10 years was quoted recently.
