You are not missing anything at all. Which is why I said most clubs will not use the whole cap

But that's incredibly risky when you've such a small squad to start with. Say for example you are unlucky and lose 3 key players to injury just after the window closes. They are all going to be out for a couple of months, leaving you short for that time frame. Leaving a few spaces in the squad for that scenario isn't going to help you at all when the window is shut, and by the time it reopens, your injured players will be back playing anyway. In the meantime, you've dropped valuable points by not having the players to fill in for the injured ones.

Maybe I am missing an option? Could a club just delist someone from the squad? Would they then not count to the cap?

It is but it could also be argued that it is risky using all the cap, your scenario could happen but with the players out for the full season too. So in that case not leaving a gap would be extremely risky too.

So the 'news incoming' that Sergio mentioned the other day is here. Peckover Transport have extended and improved their partnership with the club. Great stuff, it's what we've all been waiting for.

In the current premier league squad limits when the window opens you can adjust your registered players in your squad. So if you already have the full squad you could take out Ismail it he’s broke his ankle and then if you’ve room in the budget bring someone else in and register them in the squad. I imagine this will be the same.
for me there is always room to manoeuvre in January in emergencies. You can shift players on if you are willing to do the other club a favour. Look at Vaughan last jan for example. We can make room if we need to. I don’t see the need to save money for January when we have gaping holes in our squad currently

Still count towards the cap unless they are under 21 but I imagine can be delisted but only when the windows are open usually and have to be finalised when it shuts

so if a player is injured and put for the year in September come the window at Christmas you could delist them and use their part of the cap

I believe the wages would count no matter towards the cap. The window shuts in October so for arguments sake you lose Ismail for 6 months in November. You can delist him in January and sign someone else to replace his place in the squad but his wages will still count as far as I know. He will only not count if he leaves the club.

one reason why for me we didn’t need both a cap and a restriction on player numbers.

So those players told they can leave Peterborough will count to their cap no matter what, unless they leave ?

Yes. It’s just even if they are still there come the window closing, unless they can squeeze them into the squad, they will pay for them And count towards the cap.

I personally think it needs reviewing and anyone under the age of 23 should not count. Still promotes youngsters getting a contract. But it’s currently so limiting to build a half decent squad in this day and age. It’s too much

If a club has a development squad can they bring players into the first team and remove others back to the development squad

If it is similar to Premier League they will put their squad in before close of window and can only change it at next window. But if Juniors don’t count to the total then it would make sense to register all of those eligible

The rules for who is in the 25 man squad in the PL has nothing to do with whether the player is in the development squad or not. It is simply a matter of the player's age (with a slight twist to meet the Home Grown Player rules). If they are 21 or over and the club wants them to play a part in the coming season, they are included in the 25 man squad list. If they are under 21, guess what, they are included in the Under 21 list.

There is no incentive to include an under 21 player in the 25 man squad list.

PL clubs can revise their 25 man squad list during the winter transfer period, such as if they sell somebody or buy a new player but that's it then for the remainder of the season.

Apparently, some the details of the EFL's approach have yet to be finalised but it's looking very much like a copy of the PL approach.

It's going to end up like that other lad from Leicester that we never signed and went to Belgium or something instead.

So we are bringing in a young lad from a U23s Premier League side who has spent the last 2 seasons playing left back and playing him at right back. Is that the very best we can get?? Yet we have 400k left in the kitty. Shambles.

Why don’t you just wait and see who comes in before making outlandish comments.

    Just a suggestion.
