Cannot believe some of the stuff I'm reading on this thread. How long have we been crying out for a goalscorer? And now we have one, who's in good form and some people want him dropped because his hold up play isn't the best?

Well we have another striker who is excellent with his back to goal in Angol. Problem is, his finishing is atrocious.

This is league two, there is not a single striker in the division who is a goalscorer and has good hold up play. So it's one or the other. And I choose the goals every time.

Just looking at the stats and it's exactly like I thought. Cook is definitely the main problem when addressing our lack of goals.

He's played as a lone striker for the majority of those 77 games and still out scored probably every striker we've had in the last 20 years.

How on earth do you then just offer up the opinion that unless he's playing in a two he's suddenly now redundant?

I'm offering facts here to back up my thoughts too btw, not knee jerk nonsense after a few poor team performances. Those facts point to him scoring regularly even in this system, it really is as simple as that.

Mills and Blake for me. By far the best pairing we have had in living memory. A mere 42 goals between them in 1998/99, one of the best seasons for the club, at a higher level, in living memory.
Wells and Hanson got 41 in 2012/13, but in League Two

Agree with all three points Ulysses. To expand on your first re Cook. So many people focus on what he supposedly can't do and in that, totally underestimate what he's great at. The lad scores goals for chrissakes! That's what he does. For years we've complained about not having a goalscorer. Now we complain that our regular scorer of goals doesn't have various other skills. We're L2 for xxxxx sake and we're lucky to have him.

I thought he would leave. I thought he wasn't good enough and couldn't run.
I take it back. Well done Andy.

The stats don't lie. He may be ungainly, pigeon-toed and sometimes bloody clumsy. but this guy scores goals. He's on fire at the moment and that's the way he rides. Gets a few goals in a row - and then continues to get bloody more. I love Cookie - he is the epitome of the finest of lower league strikers. Little finesse, never a thing of beauty, but a big, bad, bruising regular scorer of goals when he's got his confidence head on.

Either you really a complete muppet, or you got out of bed the wrong side today. There isnt a team in L2 who wouldnt snap your hand off for Andy Cook.

Or he could just fight for his place in the team. Radical but true.

Anyone expecting a player who scores goals, wins all his headers, holds the ball up to feet. splays the ball bringing other players in to the game, All this while charging the ball down and harassing defenders to be playing in this league is delirious, Be thankful we have a player who works hard, Takes all the knocks and puts the ball in the net

I agree he helps out a lot defending but why can't we have a pacy player in the centre circle when he does,it annoys the hell out of me

Aye hats off Dave. It is clear, that he’d let himself “ drift” in terms of physical and mental fitness. Dietary wise, something went seriously wrong, hence we all saw the waistline get bigger and him get slower. Couple that with zero competition for his place in the squad, just look who we had challenging him for his spot, and he was on a downward spiral?

It’s evident to me the club said to him, you have xx weeks, and we will help you, to get back to fitness and in shape. He’s grasped the straw given to him and it’s paying off.

Hats off to him, and the back room staff. The hard work, along with competitive recruitment is paying off.

The other factor in our favour is he will be out of contract next summer, so it's in his interest to remain in the best possible shape fitness and form wise to get himself a good deal going forward, whether with us or elsewhere. A player like Cook will always be in demand at this level, but he will be able to secure himself a much more lucrative contract if he bangs in 20 + over the season, rather than 10 or 12.
I have nothing but praise and admiration for him. I really did think there was a strong possibility he'd be leaving this window, simply because he is the sort of player that wants to be starting every game and I thought his chances of doing that would be limited this season, given the players brought in. All credit to him for putting in the work he needed to do to get back to top form, it's exactly the sort of attitude you want in a player and long may it continue.
