Adam Chicksen vs Conor Wood: Statistics

If chicksen were all that Hopkin would not have signed callum Woods.

Most likely it is Woods at left back when he gets fit(...sigh) and next season Woods and Wood will be here as Chicksen's contract is up.
Chicksen does have a habit of getting injured or sent off so i can understand some fan's ire, he is not the most physical full back you'll see or the most creative like Caddis.

 

How about taking into account David Hopkins opinion. He sees both players every day and obviously prefers Chicksen over Wood at LB. I actually think both look better with Wood playing left mid in front of Chicksen

 

The best news to have come out of the January transfer window is that Hopkin doesn't actually rate Chicksen, which i doubted at one stage. I hope Woods can overcome his injury issues because he's an upgrade on both.

 

How do you know that Hopkin doesn’t rate Chicksen? The window certainly didn’t tell me that. It just showed me that he doesn’t rate Wood at all, not even as cover, so brought in someone that can.

The telling aspect will be if Woods starts when fit and Chicksen dropped

 

That's what happened last week, with Chicksen on the bench. Woods wasn't brought in as cover, he was brought into replace Chicksen.

 

He started ahead of Chicksen when both were available.

 

TBF, Chicksen has just returned from suspension. Hopkin had signed Woods and was always going to start him.

But once both players are fit and available, it will be telling which becomes 1st choice

 

Stuart McCall selected Rehman, even making him captain.

Managers selecting players does not automatically make them the best option.

 

With a fully fit squad it'll be Woods. There isn't even a discussion to be had.

Should be. But who knows for certain with Hopkin. As you say, some managers do pick players which fans find bizarre.

Stats aside I think most would agree that Chicksen isn’t great and we would be a better team if we had a different LB (hopefully Woods is that LB). However, I think he does get a lot of unfair stick. We’ve had some shocking team performances this season and he always seems to be singled out for criticism above and beyond other players. For me, he’s not L1 standard and if we went to move up the table we can’t rely on him in the team. However, the same can be said for quite a few of the players in our squad. Thankfully, DH has gradually phased those players out of the team. I imagine if Woods can stay fit, the same will happen to Chicksen.

 

Yes he gets a lot of unfair stick so let's start a thread that puts the spotlight on him once again. Throw in some dubious and unfounded statistical analysis and let the bashing continue.

 

The premise that you can somehow make meaningful conclusions to the relative merits of two players based on a sample of match stats is spurious to say the least. Don't take my word for it. Most of the posters have said similar.

As the justification for this is given as the 'disgraceful' treatment of one the players, I can only assume you didn't deliberately intend to encourage the negativity. In reality the thread only provides oxygen to the bashers.

 

The only stat that matters is that we're in the bottom 4 and have been all season. We've also played a game more than most teams around us.

We've had some shocking performances, individually and collectively. Some players have under-performed, some are just poor players performing to their level. Chicksen is one of the latter.

This isn't a playground. Honestly - if there isn't an acceptance that some players deserve critique for what we've seen over the last 12 months or so, then there never will be.

He isn't responsible for where we are all on his own. He's just a poor full back in a side that's often been poor. That's about it really.

We have to break this mentality that you're only a 'proper supporter' if you blindly clap everything you see and hear about the club and its players. There's nothing wrong with demanding a higher standard - especially when you consider that we've had our biggest budget for 15 years.

 

Hey up FB. Here we go again . I'm sure we would all like better than Chicksen, but given our current squad we have to trust the manager that Chicksen is preferred to Wood at LB. I can think of no reason whatsoever why Hopkin would play Ckicksen ahead of Wood if he didn't think he was a (slightly) better left back

 

I don't disagree. That stands to logic.

Equally, the fact that we used our limited finances in January to bring in a left back also tells a story. Especially when you consider that we didn't strengthen in other key areas like left wing and centre forward.

 

Nothing wrong with critique. It's the micro-analysis, singling out for blame and abuse that I object to in what is essentially a team game. No one individual player loses or wins us matches. If everyone kept that in mind during their critiques it would be good.
