I grew up in Essex and watched West Ham until I came to Bratfud in 1980. My girlfriend of the time was obsessed with Mervyn Day's legs.

It's threads like this that make me feel bad for our younger fans. Nevermind fellas, maybe when the tide turns, you'll get teams and players like these. Then you might understand why us old ones keep banging on about the old days.

I'm going to assume that Hendrix and Bearing are, in fact, Hendrie and Beagrie. In which case you've picked the exact outfield 10 that I did. It was a close call for Walsh over Tommo for me and , tbh, it makes little difference either way - they were both brilliant.

Interesting that no one has mentioned Gordon Watson, who came back from injury early in the promotion season and got two late goals against Barnsley, which kick-started our season after a poor start.
I also fondly remember the near end of season 3-1 away victory at QPR, which I was at, when Watson scored. Beags ran them ragged that day.
But you'd probably have Deano on the bench ahead of him, to be fair.
Edit. I see that @River_City_Bantam@River_City_Bantam did mention Watson amongst the potential subs. Apologies RCB.

Yeah, give us another 30 years, we'll be whizzing down to the pub in our solar-powered mobility scooters, and still arguing Kennedy or Whalley, Evans or Moore, Goddard or Jacobs, 87/8 or 98/9...

Somehow, I don't think that "I saw Bruenker" or "I saw a win under Collins" will hit those same heights! Come to think of it, I actually did see a win under Collins. Add that to seeing those earlier sides, and I am thrice blessed:grinning:

Hopefully one of the current kids breaking into the first team "does a Stuart" and starts making the right kinds of memories for the generation(s) after us.

Cheers. So many tough calls to make with that list. If you accept my starting 11, then who would you take out of the subs to get Watson in? Especially as I see I put in seven subs instead of five...so should remove two in any case! Nah, let the seven stand. That left me with no choice but to put him down into the reserves, which I'll admit seems a little rough on him.

What a side and squad this would have been! Great thread:thumbup:

Ha ha predictive text!! Yes the goalkeeping position was probably the toughest call.

Good to reminisce over two brilliant teams that entertained us so much.

My favourite team I think will always be the 84/85 side, although playing a league lower, they completely blew away that division that year, a team of free transfer misfits and youngsters assembled and managed by Cherry and ably assisted by Yorath. They were a joy to behold and will always be loved and remembered by fans privileged to have watched them

    Walsh

    Moore

    Kennedy
    Whalley
    Beagrie
    Mills
    Blake

    Subs
    Tomlinson
    McCall
    Hendrie

This would be a great team, partnerships and combinations all over the pitch - central pairings and wings - that would complement each other. I've only picked three subs as that was the limit in 98/99

I see a few people have picked Lee Sinnott. I'm sure I read at the time of signing that he had the longest throw in league football. Thing is though.... I'm not sure I remember it being used as an option.
Did I imagine reading that fact?

I switched him right in place of JL, but having second thoughts now. Lawrences work rate was amazing, and whilst Hendrie could beat a man he was always best as second striker.

Love the way Jimi Hendrix gets in your side. Probably the best guitarist that ever lived but not sure he could hack football considering he always seemed to have a fag going when pictured.

Not a lot to choose between Walsh & Thommo for sure. Both great keepers and both worthy of playing at the top level. After Downsborough, Thommo is my favourite keeper.

I thought he played Evans as a sweeper rather than the modern 5-3-2.
