It was. but the 87/88 team were even better in terms of the football they played. Now that was a thing of beauty.

I loved watching the 87,88 side but the football played under Jewell in the promotion season was the best football I've ever seen from a City side. Don't think I'll ever see anything like it again.

How under-rated was Whalley? Loved him in that 98/99 team

It's threads like this that make me feel bad for our younger fans. Nevermind fellas, maybe when the tide turns, you'll get teams and players like these. Then you might understand why us old ones keep banging on about the old days.

Good to reminisce over two brilliant teams that entertained us so much.

My favourite team I think will always be the 84/85 side, although playing a league lower, they completely blew away that division that year, a team of free transfer misfits and youngsters assembled and managed by Cherry and ably assisted by Yorath. They were a joy to behold and will always be loved and remembered by fans privileged to have watched them

Those three goals against Wolves (and the entire match) was the perfect example of what we were like that season. I remember gasping out loud when Blakey got set up to score. You just knew there was goals in that team.

I think Karl Goddard was the best left back I've seen at City. As good as Mezza going forward and better than Jacobs or Mezza defensively. Such a shame his career was so short and he never achieved anything like his potential.

    Good shout.
    I've started a new thread.
Mods - do you want to move the off topic posts about past teams out of here and into the new thread I started?

I always thought how the Whalley-McCall and the Mills-Blake combos in those two squads show how important central partnerships are. Players have both to complement each other and also understand each others game. Something we're lacking currently.

    Walsh
Wright Mitchell Wright Moore Oliver Jacobs
    Hendrie McCall Whalley Beagrie
    Mills Blake

I mentioned in the other thread how even the so called “lesser” players like Palin,Leonard,Westwood etc just slotted in to the formations. No playing centre halves up front.Settled players in settled formations. How hard is that?

Thats some team. Tough to leave out players like Lawrence and Jacobs, the balance that 97/98 side has was ridiculous, Beagrie and Lawrence were a perfect fit as wide players. Beagries trickery and Lawrence's workrate and energy.

Yeah, give us another 30 years, we'll be whizzing down to the pub in our solar-powered mobility scooters, and still arguing Kennedy or Whalley, Evans or Moore, Goddard or Jacobs, 87/8 or 98/9...

Somehow, I don't think that "I saw Bruenker" or "I saw a win under Collins" will hit those same heights! Come to think of it, I actually did see a win under Collins. Add that to seeing those earlier sides, and I am thrice blessed:grinning:

Hopefully one of the current kids breaking into the first team "does a Stuart" and starts making the right kinds of memories for the generation(s) after us.

I used to go to matches with a group of blokes who did a prediction competition in the pub beforehand. It was one pound to enter. We drew lots for order of prediction. You couldn't make a prediction that anyone drawn ahead of you had already made, and you weren't allowed to predict a City defeat. So, in normal seasons, if you were drawn late in the list you were forced to predict cricket scores that you knew had almost no chance of occurring. Those drawn early obviously predicted safe scores like 1-1, 2-1 etc. But that season, by Christmas, people were getting drawn early, predicting 3-0 and 4-1 wins and winning the pot. As you say, you knew there were goals in that team and even if they went one behind you were always confident that they'd score two and win it. The diametric opposite of our current shower.

Can't really disagree with that, though Hendrie played as a second striker in 87/88 rather than a winger (Dolan played 5/3/2). I think Palin/ Kennedy/ McCall shades the midfield over McCall & Whalley. Jacobs was a better full back, but Goddard worked well in that back five. Bruno was good, but I would put Gavin Oliver in any side we had at that level or below. What let the 87/88 team down was the strikers though we lost 11 in both seasons.

Don't forget 87/88 was also a good year in all the cups - FA Cup 5th Round, SF of Full Members Cup & QF of League Cup

He probably would, but he didn't sign for us until 1990. Amazed to find he played nearly 650 games and actually had a pretty good career in the end.

Brave to point out that one of the best City teams of the modern age didn't play the legendary success guaranteeing 4-4-2!

Same at the back with Moore and one other. Even Dreyer stepped in and was solid. We just don’t have any of that in this squad

I'm gonna have a good think about this one. Other than Karl Godard at left back. Favourite player and all that and although he won't get in many teams he's an auto selection for me.
