Why? This is patent nonsense. Who went out and spent a bucketful on “ named” players on top wages last season. They were garbage let’s be honest.

We make bang average signings whilst teams like Notts County are signing the type of players that we need.

 

I've been distinctly unimpressed with our business so far. Sarcevic looks decent but I'm not sure where Johnson fits in aside from Halliday's backup and Byrne and Baldwin are no better than what we had.

Not to mention we seem desperate to bring back two loan players who were average at best last season.

I never bought Rupps promise of investment and so far it looks like I was right.

 

Why does panic set in earlier and earlier each pre season! It’s June 19th! Lots of players will still be finding out their future and weighing up their options.
We still have a pretty bulky squad and I’d imagine we need to get a few moved on. People talking about Wyke when we have Cook, Kavanah and Young? It makes no sense to sign him imo. Sentimental nonsense.
People just need to be patient and trust GA is doing his due diligence.

 

What worries me (slightly) is of all the clubs who have signed multiple players by this point, ours is the oldest cohort with an average age of 29.3.

Yet for all that experience, to me it looks like we've only signed 2 players that slot straight into our first XI - Sarcevic and one of the CB's.

 

Agree with all of this.

More empty promises and average recruitment from the club. Same every summer.

 

If they were wanted by teams in higher leagues, mid 20s years old would be there now.

I'd prefer to wait and see. I only know about 1 of our signings and none of us know what the others will be like fitting together. Like others, I would like a CB and LWB but if they are now OK, Patto and Young look like decent "new" signings as long as we play to their strengths. Even though we had 2 terrible runs last season, we actually finished not too far outside the POs.

 

Yeah and? I said so far.

 

Only time will tell how good our recruitment has been. If we're leaking goals like a sieve half way through the season we can criticise the strategy. Bar that its all pure conjecture.

I take it you weren't around in the early 80's, When McFarland left we signed three unknown cast offs from Coventry City, brought in a largely untried junior in Stuart, an over the hill striker from Singapore (Hawley), developed a 20 year old Mark Ellis and brought in a totally unknown RW (Garry Haire) from Whitely Bay.

At that point we had only a half decent keeper, a soon to be legend upfront and a homegrown centre half to compliment them, a 13 man first team squad and 5 of those 33 or over, but moulded them into runaway Champions inside 18 months, despite going bust in the summer of 1983.

Yorath, the Smallwood of his day only managed 27 games in 3 season, most from the bench and three of the squad (Mellor, Cherry & Ramsbottom) were born in 1948.

I mean, it's not as if we ever feel let down by the end of every window so clearly we all just need to be patient.
