Sounds like he's a hope to be our next McBurnie. His 2 year scholarship ends this summer so unless we've got him to sign a new deal he'll be out of contract and it's then down to how much compensation we can agree with any potential club who wants him. I'll be interesting to see how this develops over the next 6 weeks when contracts are finalised. If there are Premier League clubs interested in him then I'd expect he'll leave and all we can do is get as good a deal for him as we can.

I should have said "apart from his early set piece".

I fear resistance is futile, however I’d like to see us keep a foward who has pace and mobility to play alongside Young and Kavanagh?

So did Ollie Mcburnie at that level but was nowhere near ready for first team football physically and when he went to Swansea they didn't rush him.

    Agreed.

I wouldn't hesitate to resign Smallwood assuming he doesn't kill the budget.

Get him sitting and breaking up play with two mobile midfielders in front of him and he'll be about as effective as you could want in league two.

Wouldn’t you add Ollie Clarke to that list, as suggest via WOAP? Could potentially fill a Smallwood size void…..

Here is a novel idea, why don’t we try him out in the men’s team? Give him a run out see how he does. Or are we just going to sell him to the highest bidder before the long suffering fans have even seen him play?

I'm at the point of just waiting for retained lists now. I know we still have the faintest of outside chances, but I'm not holding out hope. There aren't many areas of the field I wouldn't look to improve on to be honest. I think it all depends on who GA can get out the door. There's plenty out of contract who might stay in L2 from the promoted clubs, if their clubs want to try upgrade their positions in the summer? A lot are experienced heads, but Wrexham and Mansfield often field the oldest squads in L2 every week and they'll likely go up. Going for recent winners might bring a better mentality into the dressing room?

Stockport have Madden and Sarcevic who look like they'll be leaving at the minute. I know Madden is 34 but if you've caught any of their games this season, he's still a very smart forward and has only had 24 starts this season and played 60% of possible minutes but has still notched 14 in the league. Sarcevic another they've rotated out due to wanting to go younger next season, played a similar amount of minutes to Madden and has 12 goal contributions from midfield. Ryan Croasdale is up too, their DM of the last few seasons and switches the armband with Madden, another who has been rotate out but still performed well. Their keeper Hinchcliffe is up but I'd be surprised if he isn't offered a deal, and both LWBs Ethan Bristow and Ryan Rydel are up too although Rydel hasn't played since Oct after doing his ACL and Bristow hasn't been a thrilling signing.

Wrexhams are all in defence with Callum McFadzean up who is a very accomplished LB/LWB but has seemingly fallen out of favour at Wrexham behind McLean and Mendy. Sounds like their captain Luke Young is also likely getting phased out and will be free after making his 250th app recently for them, although will probably end up down south. Ben Tozer is out too, although I cant imagine there will be a clamouring for him. Jordan Tunlicliffe is another like McFadzean who'd get into most L2 squads you'd think, but has been injured and replaced at Wrexham. Aaron Hayden another defender in the same boat, few injuries at the start, replaced in the market and likely thats him done there.

Mansfield have a lot out of contract and given we've hired Sharpe who might of had a hand in bringing some in, I wouldn't be surprised to see us linked to a few. Hiram Boateng is out of a deal, big central midfielder who i thought looked good against us. George Maris in midfield has been in and out towards the end of the season but still has 15 goal involvements from midfield.

Yes , it’s gone flat and “ The list” is all that remains. Not really interested in any thoughts of play offs etc…too many missing, out of form, jaded and frankly poor players on our books. Even getting there would end up us in a far worse embarrassing situation than at Carlilse second leg! So no thank you.

We shall see if Rupp means business…?

    Only one I disagree.with is McFadzean, I think he's a poor defender.

Obviously we will have to wait and see, but it feels like we are going to pick up cast offs from the promoted clubs. What a position to be in as a once proud football club.

Have to say them players mentioned are completely uninspiring to me and thankfully I don’t think they’ll be coming here anyway. Madden and Sarcevic are getting on now, older than Smallwood when he joined. Time to move away from has beens and look at up and coming talent that may cost but could potentially bring us an even better return. I want more pace and mobility in midfield and up front, signing 30+ players who their clubs no longer want isn’t the way to go we’ve done it too many times.

Wasn't listing to say "we should approach all these players". More just pointing out that the successful sides of this season have a lot of names going out of contract and pointing out the ones likely to leave as they might not make the leap.

Just looking through squads, there's a lot of really good talent out of contracts across L2 and L1 this summer.

Looking through the EFL, a bit surprising actually that over the last 5 years the average age of a promoted squad in L2 is just over 29. L1 is just under 29 and CH is 29 and half.

I know all fans have demands for pace and mobility every summer, and we should be no different. But recent history shows you still need the right older heads in the squad to get you over the line. Maybe not your Smallwood or Taylors though.....

With the money we have peeed up the wall on three year contracts and old Giffer players we could have signed Mbappe or Messi

For me Onside, as we have nothing to lose, put the lad in for the final three games of the season and see how he goes.
We'll never know if we don't try, who knows, he may hit the net on a regular basis!
Cook on the bench instead of Smith.

But if they can do the same job they did for Stockport then I have no issue. Age isn't the issue with our squad, it is quality. Both improve us short term.

I do agree we should be looking at younger talent too. But 2 experienced heads that have been there and done it, with decent goal contributions this season is a yes for me.

Cook, Madden, Young and Kavanagh would be a decent striker quartet to call upon next season. A nice blend of young and old and they all have goals in them if the style suits.
