About to make some anchovy&egg sandwiches for supper, with the first garden produce of the year -- own Welsh onions as garnish. Might have a beer too, but really the best accompaniment is a vodka. Of which, I have:

I'm glad you clarified it was the onions that were home grown. I was wondering how you grew the anchovies in the garden....;)

Nope; they're hardy perennials, and always the first things to come up in the spring, apart from some weeds. In fact they are rather like weeds themselves: the "bulbs" split every year, and some stalks will flower and produce new onions from there. So you have to divide them almost every year and throw out half or more, or they'll take over the garden!

If we were in a dumb blonde joke, and I were a dumb blonde, I suppose now would be the time I smile sweetly and exclaim "Anchovies don't grow in the garden, silly. Everybody knows they come in tins!" But we aren't, and I'm not...

But they do come in tins, from Sweden -- can't find the Estonian versions here. Either way they're preserved in brine, not oil as done by Mediterranean sources.

Reminds me of 40 years ago, ferry across to France, little Citroen creaking under weight of as much cheap French beer and wine as we could carry back.

Are you not a fan of Hoegaarden then Zonnebloem? Like Leffe, especially the Nectar which Morrison's over here seem to have stopped stocking this last year or so, but I'm a big wheat beer fan and love my Hoegaarden.

I think if you’re in Belgium, there’s so much more choice than Hoegaarden when it comes to wheat beer. St Bernadus springs to mind. I am however, a huge fan of Hoegaarden Forbidden Fruit, but it’s hard to find (in Estonia anyway) but definitely one to try if you’ve got the chance.

You can get Landlord virtually anywhere in the UK, so I like to try local(ish) beers.

I have a couple of Hoegaarden verboden vrucht 4-packs hidden in the stockpile somewhere. Basic Leffe blond and brune are poor industrial beers. Leffe is a label, not a brewery. I have Leffe triple with the gold top, secondary fermentation in the bottle, brewed somewhere else.

Cuvée des Trolls 75cl bottle tonight.
