But thats what I am saying Park, if we sign Maynard the majority of comments will be 'same mistake again as we made with McLean, a striker at the end of his career, club never learn etc' - signing a striker within our means that meets with universal approval in nigh on impossible

Yes that would be the reaction on here but in the end it would defend how he did on the pitch

Agree. I think Port Vale will be strong contenders for top 3 this season, with or without Maynard

:p:p:p He really was so so over rated. I'm not optimistic about this season but one thing I'm happier about is that we'll struggle to construct a midfield as poor as him, Akpan, Taylor etc... from last season. Cooke aside (who's a good, steady player) none of them were fit to lace Cullen's boots

Cullen was different gravy, positioned himself so teams couldn't just pass straight through midfield.

Would love to have seen Lewis O'Brien in the same midfield.

No doubt Cullen was a good footballer but I never got the love in to be honest. Couldn't tackle, couldn't shoot, couldn't beat a man, not a lot of pace. Decent technique and could pass on the ground. Don't remember many assists though and reckon his time at Bolton and Charlton will paint the same picture.

I would have him back but he was a decent footballer, nothing special. O'Brien far, far superior.

    Now Reece Burke 'I got'.....

The bar for 'special' is incredibly high in that case!

Pretty much rules out everyone but Nahki, Windass and Burke in the last 20 years!

Cullen was a great player for us, we completely transformed in 15/16 when he came in under Parkinson. Then bringing him back, he is a player at league 1 level at least who allows the team to have more of the ball than they would without him, very useful in a possession based team like we had last time under McCall. However championship quality? Played for Bolton and Charlton, he did well at Charlton in league 1 before they got relegated from the championship last season. For whatever reason he keeps getting loaned out to clubs who either are or end up in league 1. Best of luck to him but I’m not convinced he’ll make the cut at West Ham, but I hope he does, or comes back here lol.

I thought Burke was a class above personally, but again got shipped out and now at a league 1 club. There’s more to breaking through at the top than just been neat and tidy with style in the lower leagues a lot more.

Still they’re a lot better than what we have I’d love them back if we got promoted, and say Hull don’t go up and Cullen is released by West Ham next season.

I agree with you, it's strange he keeps getting loaned out to teams that are at the wrong end of their respective divisions. I thought a Championship side would have picked him up by new on a permanent transfer. Maybe West Ham do see something in him, but imo, he needs to make a decision this season. Burke also I thought was top draw, and I wouldn't be suprised if Hull cash in on him. That lad from Wolves (Evans) was decent too, and is yet another one of that loan trio who has ended up in a relegated side. Weird isn't it?
