We're not messing about in clearing out the dross. Fair play. The first time we've acted strongly in the market for a long time. Hopefully a pre-cursor to another striker coming in too....

Must say I had my doubts about Sparks but he's doing a cracking job so far, as are our management duo. What a refreshing change from recent years.

    He was.
Much as I loved Parky's era, there's no doubt that he flogged big Jim to death. All that chasing down defenders from the front and playing when not fully fit massively affected his effectiveness later on.
But, even when clearly half lame and chronically out of form, he still brought more to the team than Kurtis Guthrie ever did.

Don’t know or care if it’s Ryan, Turnbull or the coaches but they’re doing a job in getting rid of deadwood this window. Hopefully this means another new striker in .

We were shite under McCall and we saw how players like Sutton and Paudie O'Connor look completely different when he'd gone. I'm not saying Guthrie would have had that sort of transformation, but he did join the club in arguably its worst spell of football i can remember and its hard to fully judge any player on that.

Come on. Seriously?! There were no offers on the table. Think we've established that McCall spouted a tonne of lies during the close season and transfer window. He was trying to rebuild his confidence and convince fans that we had a wanted striker in the squad. Nothing else

I'm not sure who is deserving of the credit, whether it be Turnbull, Sparks or the Interim duo but fair play.

I still think we are a couple of experienced additions short of this being a great window, but there is plenty of time.

Strange how they appear to be doing what the vast majority on here had pointed out for a long time, it just shows that the purse strings were not being tightened by Rupp but more by Rhodes or McCall's inability to judge a player.

Some Vale fans are delighted with their new signing having seen the video clip of Guthrie ( presumably produced by his agent). Funny how players rarely live up to their promotional material.

We could replace him with a vacuum cleaner and it'd score as many goals. We'll bring in someone else, but even if we don't, he's no loss whatsoever.

Goodbye Kurtis, we hardly knew ye.

Actually, we knew ye all too well...

I forget who he replaced, was it 28 goal Doyle or top scorer Vaughan? Either way, he outlined the dangers of not doing your research. ..

Hard to believe he was here for a year. DMH next please. We're long overdue a good deck clearing.

Very very unlikely - to be honest if we have the Don until the summer that is not a problem for me. We are working our socks off on a new striker but unlikely to happen until early next week (so I have been told)

But meant to add with the current momentum at the club you never know..............

We often comment on the virtues and shortcomings of players based on how we see them in our team. It's clear though that different players thrive or struggle according to the circumstances in which they find themselves. Sometimes a manager or a system or the others around them don't suit a particular player and they get a load of abuse and are written off by people on this forum, not least myself, who really know nothing about their true ability. How many times have people come to us having been excellent in the past at other clubs and have proved hopeless at VP? And how many players were hopeless for us and thrived elsewhere? Perhaps we should be a little more considerate and savvy in our assessments of players about whom we really know nothing.

I don't remember this many replies when any another of our ex strikers went through barren spells.

Strange really. He came, he was crap and after a short time he moved on. Not really sure why you're all revelling in his failure like he slept with all your missus' or sommat.

I guess the difference is that Hanson was 29/30 years old during the 18 month goal drought you are referencing, clearly in major decline from his peak, having been run into the ground by Parky and had several injury layoffs. Prior to that he'd scored 76 goals in a distinguished Bradford City career.
By contrast, Guthrie, at 26, should be at or near his peak.

The Newport goalkeeper is still ahead of Guthrie in the goalscoring charts.

    Stealing a living.
