What I'm reading is that PV are glad to have signed Guthrie as they think he will work hard and give his all.

Hmmm...

More promisingly, they're expecting him to partner Mark Cullen up front.

You know what, I think that might work to some extent.

Let's face it, we bozo'd last January and signed two target man-type players (Novak & Guthrie) to add to our other target man-type player (Donaldson).

At least they seem to understand the basic fundamentals of balance and stylistics.

They also have David Worrall on the wing who has a massive amount of assists this season.
Guthrie was played on the wing here and had very little support in terms of people creating anything for the strikers. His record at this level isn’t terrible. He was in a terrible side at BCAFC.

 

I saw they expect him to get supply. Actually he didn't look that bad in the air, but he didn't get chances so much as long diagonals to the wing, which were largely useless.

 

We were shite under McCall and we saw how players like Sutton and Paudie O'Connor look completely different when he'd gone. I'm not saying Guthrie would have had that sort of transformation, but he did join the club in arguably its worst spell of football i can remember and its hard to fully judge any player on that.

 

We often comment on the virtues and shortcomings of players based on how we see them in our team. It's clear though that different players thrive or struggle according to the circumstances in which they find themselves. Sometimes a manager or a system or the others around them don't suit a particular player and they get a load of abuse and are written off by people on this forum, not least myself, who really know nothing about their true ability. How many times have people come to us having been excellent in the past at other clubs and have proved hopeless at VP? And how many players were hopeless for us and thrived elsewhere? Perhaps we should be a little more considerate and savvy in our assessments of players about whom we really know nothing.

 

If you check his previous stats and the fact he ain't scored for us he's actually due goals!

 

Not sad to see him go at all but think he's actually due goals! And if they have a couple of wingers and play him down the middle as a target man he will probably get goals, at the end if the day he just didn't fit with us and won't be missed

 

If anything it’s was us who didn’t do our homework on the player. Played out of position when he was played and played a system that doesn’t suit a player like him.
He can clearly score goals at this level.
It didn’t work out for him here but I hope he can prove those who wrote him off wrong.

 

I don't disagree with that, play him down the middle with a couple of wingers and he might me a different player, it wasn't his fault we signed him and played him out of position, with the pandemic and everything im glad he's got a new club and he's probs on more money now aswell! Fare play to him

 

Apparently Port Vale de-registered Theo Robinson so Guthrie could play.

 

They also de-registered left sided player Harry McKirdy ex Carlisle bit of a nutter but available.

 

22% scoring record in league two. Not quite proving he can do it really. I'd want my centre forward to average more than 10 goals in a season, unless he can prove that he he brings something else to the table like the ability to bully defenders the way Hanson could. Sorry but Guthrie does nothing for me, and what I've seen of him he's weak and lazy.

 

Yeah but the Waggon and Horses don't need strikers at the minute.
