Agyei allegedly signed for another club weeks ago, which would rule any club in England out.

 

Thought you could sign for a club anytime but not play until window reopens...could be wrong ...

 

My understanding is a player can sign a pre-contract agreement in January if they are within last 6 months of their contract, or is that for a club outside of the EFL jurisdiction

 

Crewe offered him a fresh contract 6 days ago, so can't have signed for a new club a few weeks back.

You can sign for clubs in England in advance, just the contract doesn't start until July 1st. We signed Harry Lewis on May 16th last year, when Southampton still had 2 league games to play.

From January, any player registered to the FA with a contract expiring on June 30th that summer can talk to clubs in other counties.

I think the official line for talking to other English clubs is that they can't talk to other clubs until June 1st, unless they've already been informed their contracts won't be renewed. If they've already been set for a release, they are basically free to start talking to anyone. Hence us announcing Lewis' arrival last year about 6 or 7 weeks before the window opened.
