Well he wont be getting near that again. Smaller wage but a longer deal with incentives might tempt.

 

On another note...our number 1 GK from a few years ago is playing NL football next season and our number 2 from the same season is possibly playing PL football.

It might be more a case of what we think they are worth rather than what we can afford to pay

 

Worth more than our midfield judging by this season! I firmly believe Hughes rated him highly tbh. I’d be shocked if Salford don’t have a bigger budget.

 

We did get Walker from Hearts and Smallwood from Hull and I can’t see either of them getting less than Watt

 

Walker plays a different role and Smallwood won’t be on as much as everyone thinks, he literally turned down moves due to location and that’s the reason he picked us. Sure it won’t be pennies but he wasn’t dangled a big bag of gold to come here, he came due to us being the closest club that gave him a respectable offer. I doubt our budget is as big as Salford, Stockport and Mansfield’s but it maybe 4th biggest. Salford pay big amounts in agent fees, which Sparks himself admitted gives you an idea of budgets.

 

Smallwood was courted. Captained 3 sides to promotion. Posh were in for him so we beat them.....he chose us.

As for Watt - we could have easily matched Salfords package whatever it is. We were more likely not prepared to pay his asking price. There in lies the difference. He hardly pulled up any trees at City....

 

They may well have been in for him but he was never going to move there - as Wilsden said, location was the biggest factor for Smallwood so to say we beat Posh to his signature is stretching it.
I agree about Watt though.

 

It’s more what Hughes thought about Watt than any of us tbh, case in point Gilliead.

Smallwood chose us due to location and would most likely have been a squad player at best with Peterborough, but it this way he wouldn’t have got all the set pieces to himself.

 

Barnsley made him an offer too.
