    That was my point.
I don't think that comes into Hughes equation.
Before under Adams it was one year deals to certain players, too easy to to keep swapping and changing. Long term deals shows they arent contemplating failure this time round, why worry about if it's not part of your plans going forward

Im not so sure of that tbh.....All the below can be released in 12 months time plus Critchlow and Harratt returning to Huddersfield. Thats potentially 13 players we can have off our books.

Appreciate that we have quite a few with 2 or 3 year deals but if they can shift on Kelleher and Threlkeld this summer - then shouldn't have many issues trying to bin off Hendrie, Sutton, Foulds etc who will just have a year left on their deals. IF they are not wanted mind....

    Out of contract 2023
    • Doyle
    • Threlkeld
    • Ridehalgh
    • Kelleher
    • Songo'o
    • Gilliead
    • Wood
    • Scales
    • Eisa
    • Angol
    • Cook

Just stating it's going to be a long couple of seasons if this doesn't work. We all hope it does work.
Next summer would be limited to swapping the loan players.
The bookies have us odds against for promotion (7/4). It's highly likely to not lead to promotion this season although we all hope otherwise.

These won't be Bradford City Players in six weeks time.
    • Threlkeld
    • Kelleher
    • Cook
These will be on peanuts (likely replaced by other youngsters coming through) -
    • Wood
    • Scales
Leaving these four that you could trade for other players -
    • Songo'o
    • Gilliead
    • Eisa
    • Angol

Im not convinced Cook leaves for definite. Throw in Doyle and Cook back into your list and not a lot of difference to this summer then....O'Donnel, Paudie, Watt, Evans, Cooke, Vernam, Lavery and Robinson.

Like I already said, if we have managed to get contracted players like Hornby, Threlkeld and Kelleher off our books then why can't we shift those with just a year left next summer?

We probably could but it costs money. Players don't willingly take a paycut very often.
We'd be reliant on players finding a two year deal elsewhere.
My understanding is that severance packages for players start at 40%. We will be usually paying them something to leave.

I agree with everything you've stated there.
The fact remains we are still more likely to not get promoted, than get promoted.
Only 4/24 get promoted each season.
Let's hope one out of the four is us or we could be in for a long couple of seasons.

I am very impressed with the window... literally got such good squad depth now..

I have said it before but having five subs is criminal. Imagine chasing the win by taking Eisa, Oliver, Chapman off for Angol, Harrat and Young... wow. Still having two left over for tired legs..

That really looks good on paper. If only football was played on paper not grass.
i am quietly optimistic though. We have built a very capable squad and its still over two weeks until a ball is kicked in anger. Hopefully by that time, the players have gelled and we get of to a good start.

    It's looking positive.

Not sure about East, Platt, or the left back spot, and not totally sure about Eisa either, but we're never going to have a 100 % perfect side and I know several posters will argue in favour of most of those players anyway.

Chapman, Walker, the centre forwards, and Smallwood look tasty.

The defence looks a bit midtable, but if we're controlling games we might be able to get away with it.

Most of them are guesses really its hard to pick this starter 11, wouldn't be surprised to see young or even angol starting there instead, time will tell. Maybe a tad early to judge the CBs yet think Platt and Odusina will pair well. But yeah early days!

I personally think the defence looks solid Platt looks commanding from the little I have seen and either one of the other options look very capable with Smallwood in front of them

Depth for once is amazing to see. Question on the line up, does anyone think we are going with a 4231 anymore?

From watching on saturday we never once had a 4231 shape. I know we played it all last season under MH, but from the Spain trip, there's an overhead shot of two teams in a video. One playing 442 the other 433 assuming for drills against those systems, but from the pool interview a few players did in Spain, they did say 'they've been learning the new system the gaffer wants us to play'. Hard to know for sure with a squad as big as ours at the moment.

Ryan East looks the weak link to me based on his experience alone. Can see him being a bench player to begin with, with a chance to make his mark off the bench and in the Papa Johns games. I think Osadebe/Smallwood/Sutton are ahead of him in centre mid.

The squad is shaping up very nicely.

I’m not too sure about Halliday considering he hardly played for Fleetwood but he obviously fits with what Hughes wants.

I still think LB could possibly be strengthened but I’m not sure we will see any movement there.
