'Jokes' which might offend

But you're not very likely to be on the butt end of those jokes, are you? It's easy to be 'not offended' if the jokes don't affect you.

 

All comedy is inappropriate in some shape or form. If we believe in free speech, we have to believe in the right to risk offending someone.

 

What I laugh at has nothing to do with you. You know nothing of my sense of humour or what I find acceptable or not acceptable. You might be surprised to find being a working class white van driver I don't go out of my way to offend people, very rarely someone may be offended by my take on a joke or by something I find amusing. I'm gonna be honest with you, in a world where people routinely kill each other, rape each other, where kids are regularly abused, there are a lot more things that I can be offended by than someone worrying about what I think of a joke. I think it's called each to their own.

 

You're right, nobody has the right not to be offended...

 

Sure. But offending those who are in the majority, who are comfortable, or privileged, or wielding power, or on the make, or abusing others, is very different from laughing at those who are disadvantaged or the butt of prejudice.
My problem with humour based on prejudice and discriminates is that it perpetuates and exacerbates those things.
One of the reasons why the Tories hate the BBC and Channel 4 so much is because they are constantly having the piss taken out of them by comedians. They'd much rather those comedians were still aiming racist, sexist and homophobic gags at ordinary people, like in the 60s and 70s, than aiming their laughter at them.

 

I am against isms of most things however in this increasingly PC country can it really be said that respect for women and ethnic minorities has improved I would say not.
Bias racism and misogyny may have been repressed but it’s bubbling up to boiling point under the surface far worse than the old days

I'd never go out of my way to deliberately offend someone. But I think its all about context. I don't think any topic should be 'off limits' as such.

 

So what's your view of a City fan calling out 'put the kettle on love' to a female lino - which is where this discussion started?

 

I think its stupid, I don’t think its funny.

That’s not to say I think jokes ‘aimed on the basis of gender’ should be stopped en masse.

Nor do I. It's possible to make gender based jokes that don't belittle people.

 

Apparently being racist, lying, immoral and sexist is highly popular amongst the electorate.

 

You forgot corrupt, nepotistic, self-enriching and incompetent. I suppose immoral covers the first three of those, but it's insufficiently specific.

 

It's a poor attempt at humour. Doesn't offend me though. Or should we report the fan to a steward for a piss poor joke?

Today's snowflake society would drop like flies if you showed them the classic comedy film.

 

Im not saying you are wrong but it has gone far too far in some cases. You cant say much nowadays without some wetwipe getting offended. And a lot of the time its on someone elses behalf.
