I am very patriotic but I understand a lot of people are not so these days, at the end of the day we are all entitled to our own view. Leaving the EU has shown how different people's take on things varies.
Personally I don't think we should had a referendum but we did and the situation now highlights the division. I don't have a problem with people who are not patriotic but I don't like the way Remainers and Guardian readers look down on people who are patriotic.
That's basically why I find this question impossible to answer, whichever answer I give would betray one of my loyalties.

People with differing views especially on something like Brexit will rarely find common ground. One thing we can all agree on is that politicians of any persuasion will seize on a photo or publicity opportunity when it comes up. Sporting success usually provides that opportunity.

    Cracking post.
I've attended a few England games over the years the one at Wembley when the Scots came down and beat the World Champions 3 on their own ground as they claimed possibly being the best fantasti atmosphere az you would expect 1000 of Scots sat on the grass outside Wembley listening to radios and also the crowd noise from within the Stadium.
The following fixture af Hampden in the British Home Championship was something else, no segregation English and Scottish fans together in the old Rangers end that certainly tested your allegiance to England.
But for me it doesn't compare with my allegiance to my football club.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation there.
Not all Guardian readers and/or remainers have the same views about such things.
In my experience, as a fully paid up remainer and Guardian reader, it's not patriotism that is disliked, it's jingoism, xenophobia and the desire to return to a pre-multicultural Britain that has long since disappeared, if it ever existed.

I think there is a differenve between patriotic and nationalism. I am both a remainer and guardian reader and v patriotic. However i do agree with your sentiment. Some are anti football and it does appear anti England. I got piled on, on Twitter for pointing out if the left want to win then they need to get off their better than thou pedestal. Football could have united the country but there are some proper party poopers out there

I don’t think the country will ever be united, the country is polarised on the biggest issues of Brexit and Covid. Once upon a time that may not of divided the country permanently but with social media everyone sees everyone’s opinion instantly. It’s same in other countries however, look at how divided USA are with regards to their politics, often leading to protests and riots.

Still England for me. Like I've said before, city have been promoted seven times in my lifetime/ remembered lifetime but England have only bossed it once and I was two.

Not for me. As much as I would love England to do it tonight and being very patriotic, the fact is, I've never seen England play live, so as a football team, I haven't got anywhere near the same affinity I have for City.

Whatever the result tonight, for me, it will be time to move on and look forward to the new season.

If I am abroad and someone asks me what country I am from, I tend to say I am British and explain where I live. I have seen England play live, but City are my team, the one I go to see, probably around 30 times a year. Compare that to England 3 times in a life time.

Not read the thread but why not both? This England squad will be successful for the next 8/10 years with the players it has and coming from. Surely city have to be successful at some stage in that time. It’s about time we got our act together

I really hope the country can put its differences to one side and come together tonight.
In the 70s & 80s the national front and later the EDL tried to hijack the football team and our flag, in the 90s Blair was as bad as Boris is now. Remember the Cool Britannia nonsense culminating in Prescott getting a bucket of water tipped over his head when made to attend the Brits!
At the Rugby World Cup in 2018 Brain Moore very publicly told Boris the bandwagon to f**k off when he appeared on the telly in his replica England jersey.
The England team, the flag and our nationality are NOT something attached to a political belief ! From the staunchest guardian reading remainers to the most hardline sun reading leavers, from the COVID cautious to the conspiracy theory nut jobs, get behind the team FFS!!
We were England before Brexit and we’ll still be England in the future, no matter what our idiot leaders do or don’t do they can’t take away our birthright!
Across the Nation, in Pubs & Bars, at BBQs and living rooms all over the land let’s all be as one and cheer England to victory! (Unless it is at the expense of a City promotion in which case Come on Italy!)

Why do you say Britain and not England? I expect very few people who hail from either England, Wales or Scotland would say they are British.

Johnson should think things through. He is actually the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and not England. If he wants to be the Prime Minister of England, then that could be seen as encouraging the break up of the UK, not something which I would have thought a Conservative and Unionist leader would want to encourage!
So yes he can celebrate the match, but needs to be sensitive to other parts of the UK. At least Blair was promoting Cool Britannia not just one section of the nation!
