Those possible signings in the nearly season gripe a bit. Just think what could have happened as a club/team

Whether or not it was ok to sack Cherry the appointment of Dolan was just as wrong as the appointment of Trueman would be now
City were not going to go down once they returned to Valley Parade and as stated by you the first half of 1987/8 saw the best performances in the 60 years I have followed them
December 1987 was the killer and the reason they missed out on promotion- failure to sign players in Feb/ March 1988 could not have improved the return in the last few months (apart from the last 2 matches)
Dolan messed up in Summer 1988 and proved his managerial skill at both Rochdale and Hull who both failed miserably under his guidance
If we had appointed an outsider as manager after Cherry I remain convinced we would have entered the 90s in the first division and not the third thanks to the players Cherry left behind

Despite as you claim Dolan messed up in summer 88, he still had City mid table in the championship and got them to the quarter final of the league cup knocking out Everton on the way, 4th round of FA cup knocking out Spurs. After cup defeats in next round Tordoff couldn’t wait to sack him and replace him with Yorath who was a total failure. Hell Dolans cup record was better than Parkinson as he also had fantastic cup success in 87/88 as well as narrowly missing out on promotion. As for your statement that City couldn’t have gone down in 87 after returning to valley parade you will find the likes of McCall and Jackson do not agree with that verdict .You must be very bigoted against Dolan as few could state he was a failure at City with a two year record most of our managers could only dream of.

Dolan a failure? Am I reading this right? Played, along with Jewells promotion side, the best football I've ever seen in over 40 years of watching City. The only reason we missed out on promotion, in my opinion, was because the board failed to strengthen with players we were linked with such as Andy Tonwsend. Had this happened Dolan would have taken us up.

Dolan's spell at Hull saw him working at place that pushed the ER reign here. I was living out there at the time and the stuff he had to deal with was crazy. That said, he brought Brian Mitchell and Greg Abbott in. Abbott did well all things considered but I think Mitchell suffered a really bad knee injury.

It’s not me saying Dolan was a failure,I’m defending his record from attack by a poster called @BWWB@BWWB

Always thought it was a massive step up as I remember Dolan running school holiday football courses at Scholemoor and then he was City manager

He was youth coach at City for a few years, then assistant manager when Yorath left.

I used to go to those footy courses at Scholemoor. Can’t remember Dolan being there but Tibor Szabo certainly was and he also ran a skills session on Tuesday tea times. 1985-88ish. He’d played a few games for City

Tibor Szabo, blast from the past, I wonder what Fordy would have made of him.

Considering some on here have been told that Hurst has already signed a contract with us, despite the short odds, its surprising the bookies are not aware of him being signed up, as they are still taking bets on him

Thanks for pulling this thread back Foggie.

It's a fair point about the quality of footie under Dolan

That Leigh Palin second goal against Middlesbrough in the 2-0 home win of the 'nearly' season, remains the best sequence of football I've ever seen us do.

We also outplayed them at Ayresome Park. Myself and lads memorably got chased through the streets of Boro. Apparently I stood out a bit, so any pretence of blending in fails when you're a West Indian in the middle of Middlesbrough **so funny
