I was thinking this. The issues of not wanting to travel or play L2 are probably minimal if a player is joining a professional and ambitious club. Apart from big crowds, which some players don't like, we've got nothing to offer players.

 

Possibly. But didnt stop Bolton signing a crop of decent players.

It is clear from what McCall said we have been unsuccessful in convincing the targets we were after to come here and so I'm completely correct in saying there's no reason to believe it's due to wanting to save on a couple of weeks wages

We have this every single window with players now at the club. We blame something else for not getting our targets. Now have we not done enough research into whether these are realistic targets or whether they want to live in this area or what wages they will accept? Do we look at names and then find out they don’t want to come or do we have a plan?

We’ve missed out on so many. Particularly strikers. If the press is to be believed.

Exactly. I think the 'Big Crowds' thing is overstated - and its a non issue at the minute because crowds aren't even allowed in!! Lower league footballers are like most professionals; their selection process will be driven by a combination of wages/contract length, chances of success, location. They'll speak to people they know for insight into what's going on with the club. And our recent history simply won't be attractive. With the salary cap now in place, we can't offer anything that materially attracts players. And sadly, I know of a couple of people who work in sports media and the commercial side of football, who don't paint a pretty picture about the level of vision, strategy and leadership at the top of the club. So we can't even sell 'the project' to players. McCall is a players-manager. A great guy who I can see a number of players wanting to play for. I think he'll be well spoken of, so for all that some don't entirely rate him as a manager, he's probably one of the few things that might help us get certain players.

2 big differences:

1) Bolton are still paying big contracts.
2) Bolton can still genuinely claim to be a big club. Yes they're in a mess, but I've no doubt that at some point in the next few years, they'll find some investment and be fine. At the very least a good League 1 side, probably a championship side again within 5 years or so.

We can't profess to be big at this level, not any more. Any time we find ourselves down here, we make a pigs arse of a job, getting back up.

What was the Vaughan situation? He was happy to come here - he just didn't like what he found. An unprofessionally run outfit, with a manager that didn't want to play attacking football. He wanted out. I don't blame him. The 'Vaughan situation' is really 'the how in the hell are we running our club' situation. We need to be a club that can attract players, and we need to be a club that can identify the right sort of player. We've had since January to identify and recruit a decent striker. We haven't. There are no real excuses for that.

 

But in the other hand you are saying we could be seeing how much money we have from cup games etc like we knew they could be a possibility of drawing Liverpool.

The concerning factor to me that we say that we spoke to them players but none of them are here which highlights to me that we are not an attraction we used to be.

No excuses not signing a forward already but I believe we are happy with Novak, Guthrie, Clarke and Donaldson but don't want to come out and just say that.

 

Henderson and Maynard were,and still are,playing in the same division as City.
