Cook is joint third top scorer in the division and has probably got the best scoring rate we have had from a striker in some time, yes he misses chances too - but that is the nature of the beast at league 2 level. The last time I checked the stats Cook had missed the most big chances in the division, but the others in the top three of that category were also in the top four goalscorers. There is a reason these players are playing in league 2.
Our problem is there is no goal threat at all outside of Cook and that is what is costing us - our three in behind the striker do not offer goals, with the possible exception of Angol who cannot be relied upon due to fitness and if Cook was to be injured we'd be completely screwed in the goals department.

But can xG predict how many swings of the banjo it will take until the cow gets walloped?

If only we had got Mullin! Playing in a shite Wrexham side and was shuffled back to midfield by Parky.
he’s wasted there. Was upfront mostly and scored 8 in 10 now but we missed the boat.
Same with Stockton who some said we were in for. With either of those we’d be in top three IMORogered Tart and JonButterfield like this. -

XG starts stats are fine but they don't put the ball in the net. Brentford used xG to find strikers that did though. Then paid lots of money for them relatively speaking.

If we had end product, we'd piss this league is the jist of xG.
Take Callum Cooke for example, in the league this season he's created 43 chances in 11 games, the most chances created in the EFL.... he has only 2 assists. Yes, it may boil down to the ball into the attackers feet/head being not the best quality, but 43 chances, surely that's boiling more onto the finishers. Andy Cook has had the most shots in L2 this season, only managing 5 goals from 36 efforts. Hopefully it starts dropping for them but we've been so wasteful so far.Dennis likes this. -

I’m wasting my time in replying in all likelihood but imagine the pitch is broken down into imaginary squares and there was a big set of data that told you, based on past matches, how often a chance is converted when it happens in that square…… that’s what xG is. It gives you a measure of the quality of chances a team creates.
traditional ‘shots on goal’ numbers have been kept for years but make no distinction between a shot from six yards out or from 30 yards out. A team may have registered 10 shots on goal but in all honesty they could have been pot shots that never looked like going in.
xG is a great predictor of how teams will perform long term. Lucky teams get found out more often than not.
to reference your player who ‘can’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo’ …… xG tells you how many goals they should have scored based on the positions and chances their team mates have created for them. Can your old school statistics tell you that?!
Have a look at a Wyscout report and they use xG information. Million pound transfer deals are conducted on the back of the information this info provides.
Most clubs use Wyscout or similar these days as part of their scouting…..football has moved on behind the scenes in so many ways but the mindset of blinkered fans often doesn’t. We know that from the terraces and this forum.
I don’t really care if we hoof it like Parky’s teams or pass it ala McCall’s. I just want to see a side achieving their potential and winning matches.
but when many are mocking the process at City and some are ridiculously calling for Adams out, they should step back, take a look around the division, and appreciate we aren’t far off being where we need to be. A clinical striker gets this team up based on the number……over to you, Ryan/Stefan!bantamdave41 likes this. -
