Only the (dare I say it) ignorant don’t recognise the importance of xG in today’s modern game.

These recent L2 stats make interesting reading for us.

We are one of the top three sides in the division based on the ‘quality’ of chances created and have drastically improved from last season offensively.

This underlines the need for a good striker in January - may well be the diff between going up or falling short….again.

I think even the (dare I say it) ignorant could have told you that without the need for xG statistics.

It's blindingly obvious and staying is right in the face every matchday.

The xG statistics are promising though in that last season, during the good run and when xG was still low, we could all tell it would fizzle out. And it did. Hopefully the high xG statistics mean that even if we don't get that striker we want then we may still create enough chances for someone in our team to have a purple patch and just about get us over the line.

So based on our wins so far, Bristol Rovers should be a routine home win for us.

XG starts stats are fine but they don't put the ball in the net. Brentford used xG to find strikers that did though. Then paid lots of money for them relatively speaking.

Didnt we once try and get Ivan Toney , on loan I think, from Newcastle?

Seen him in a couple of games for Brentford this season…very impressive.

That goal he scored in the hat trick against us in the cup at VP, free kick from the half way line and I think it was Hornby he lobbed.

There is only one meaningful statistic in football, and that's the FINAL SCORE. Anything else is incidental.

Only the (dare I say it) completely dumb retards don’t realise that goals win games and xG is completely irrelevant. Quality strikers who convert that phantom xG cost money and we don’t spend any.

If we had end product, we'd piss this league is the jist of xG.

Take Callum Cooke for example, in the league this season he's created 43 chances in 11 games, the most chances created in the EFL.... he has only 2 assists. Yes, it may boil down to the ball into the attackers feet/head being not the best quality, but 43 chances, surely that's boiling more onto the finishers. Andy Cook has had the most shots in L2 this season, only managing 5 goals from 36 efforts. Hopefully it starts dropping for them but we've been so wasteful so far.

The maths is useful despite what some philistines on this thread think. Cook here is a good example. If his current strike rate is approximately 1 goal for every 7 good chances, and that's a stat that is reflected in the last few seasons then that's useful info. Can we find a striker with a 1 in 5 strike rate or 1 in 4.

His career total goals per game, irrespective of chances, is better than 1 in 3, that translates into 16/17 league goals per season, which is decent enough.

They are used in recruitment side and shape the betting markets these days, which are worth millions.
As you say, Brentford have used them wisely.
