Is it £6 hard cash or £6 on your tax code?

so depending on tax level worth between £0-£3 per week. Those on 20% band would be £1.20 a week

That's too knowledgeable and numbery for me
I claimed £6 per tax relief, and got it.

basically you only pay tax at 20 per cent depending on income so the actual relief you get is 1.20 per week in your pocket

Unless he means he received £6 in his pocket so relief was £36 per week

That's right. The allowance is non-taxable. Claiming it through your tax code means that HMRC increases your tax code so you receive an additional £6 in your salary.

so your tax code changes by different amount depending on your current coding?

I thought it was like the allowance for laundering your uniform in certain jobs. Mine gives me an allowance of £60 which changes my tax code by 60. The back dated payment for 5 years was £60, £12 a year at 20% tax rate

An extra 1.20 in your take home pay. 6 onto your tax code does not equal 6 pound in your take home pay. It just means you can earn an extra 6 quid without it being taxed

Apologies, I was confusing two quite different things.

Firstly, if your employer pays the £6 home working allowance, it is tax free. There is no more tax to pay on it.

Secondly, if your employer isn't paying the £6 home working allowance, then it's a matter of claiming that £6/week against your tax due (it can be done online apparently). In which case, you'll receive £1.20/week tax relief through your tax code if you're a 20% tax payer or £2.40/week if you pay tax at 40%

No but for the expense I'm saving in commuting I'm not really interested in claiming anything.

I am today because it's my day off!

No chance of me working from home, so it's the same routine for me as it has been since March, socially distanced working from the office.

I thought the roads yesterday on my commute both ways were just normal, so I think a lot more must be working at their normal workplace than last March.

I can’t work from home. But my better hasn’t stepped foot into her office since last March, and probably won’t till this May. Saved a fortune in fuel, as she’s probably only driven her car three times since, but I’m dreading the gas and electric bill coming through after this cold snap.
