Has everyone been working from home this week? How are you finding it? Easier or harder? Positives/Negatives?

I officially start working from home on Monday. Not sure whether to look forward to it or not.

I’m starting as from Monday. Put a baby gate (extra high version) on my office door and turned the screws a few extra turns, hopefully the kids (5 and 9) and the wife won’t be able to open it.

Started last week, not sure when it will end not been given a time frame. Biggest issue I have is our director who I do most my work with and for us over 70 now, and he’s got family who have had cancer so he won’t be back for the 12 weeks at least.

From a selfish point of view it has left me with little to do and very bored, and the view out of the office at work is fantastic. Strange how you can miss things like that about work but it just helps with the mood. I’d say all negative so far. But it’s understandable.
Wouldn’t surprise me if I’m furloughed sooner rather than later.

I think a lot of people are shocked at how much harder it is. More distractions, more chance to just eat all day. Plus if kids are at home it is even worse. You wouldn’t take the kids into the office and expect to get all your work done so it is strange that people think they can do at home.

I always work from home but usually only a couple of days a week. You do get used to it but it feels strange at first.

Try and go for a walk on lunch if you have a lunch. Just round the block. and don’t work in the room you are going to be spending the evening in.

Also stick something on in the background if you don’t do much work on the phone. Tv show or the radio or something. Makes up for not having people to chat to

EDIT - Forgot to say, make sure you still take breaks and your lunch. Lock your laptop etc and go make a brew and have a sit for 10/15 mins away from the work. And as I said on lunch go for a walk and make yourself some lunch. Try not to eat sat at your work, it’s tempting to do that but I feel it concentrates you more if you come away from it

Most people will find it harder. You have all these distractions without having those around you keep on track so if you aren't really disciplined and self-motivated you will struggle. A benefit can be that you don't have to wear work clothes but then if you aren't good at motivating that can also be a negative and you should still get dressed up like you are going to work

Depending on your job though a benefit can be that you can choose your own hours. It's one of the things I worry about if this impacts me being self-employed so I have to go back into normal employment. I just can't do 9-5's. I'm not good at sleeping, never have been, even if I goto bed early I just won't drop off until 3am at the earliest (and by that point I'm so annoyed at having not gone to sleep then going to bed early ends up being counterproductive so I end up not going to sleep at all) so early starts aren't really on even though I'm not someone who needs 8 hours. And In a 9-5 I always have a productive crash in the afternoon to a point I just clock watch. Being self-employed means I can get up between 8am and 9am, do some of the simple work while I leisurely eat breakfast before jumping in the show. Then work between 10:30-1pm. I'll do another hour or so around 4pm and another 1-2 hours between 6pm and 9pm. Then my main work block is between 10pm and 2am, this is when I'm most productive

Audiobooks for me, my Audible subscription is perhaps one of my most essential work tools

Think you may have to "dig in" Wilsden it's going to be at least another 8 weeks before you are able to enjoy the view from your office again.
I started working from home this week and have the office phone line diverted to me and am still bored the phones hardly ringing and apart from the health authority contracts I may as well not bother
Am finding being sat at my desk at the same time I would start usually helps but never thought I would say be glad to get back to the office with all its to banter

If we are in this situation for a few months and it works out for firms I can see a lot of them wanting to reduce office space going forward and thus reduce over heads.

hopefully if they do they look at paying for their employees broadband etc

Something you could do if your work colleagues are also struggling is you could open video chat session with them using things like Skype, slack or discord to create that work environment where you have people to banter with. Ideally you will want either a second screen, a laptop or an iPad so you can have it open without getting in the way of any work on the computer

I doubt it for productivity reasons. It may be more expensive to have office space but it's easier to keep people on track.

Not to mention that everyone currently working at home is in breach of their broadband contract. It's residential not business broadband. As long as you aren't doing excessive activities that they can tell without doubt that it's commercial use they let it slide but they also won't go out of their way to help you when things go wrong which business can't afford. They would have to pay to have a commercial leased line put in which depending what you need is a couple k a year with a 2 year commitment (so you couldn't move house) and can go upto over 10k a year as that's the only way they could get the level of priority help needed. You would also need space to put a server rack and they would need to get a network engineer in to connect up your home so only your work computer was using this connection and everyone else was using your residential one.

Even then if your connection goes down that's a few hours at least you can't work and in many jobs that's limiting the work others can do

Seriously, make sure you do a workstation assessment and get your set up right. Very easy to injure yourself at home if you don’t; last thing you need at the moment is a strain on your back, neck or shoulders that you cannot do anything with.

I used to manage homeworkers about ten years ago, when I was in financial services, and we did have a few issues.

Make sure you move around a bit if you are someone that can get engrossed in their work.

Wish I had option to work from home. My employers expect a lot of us in still. I have voiced my opinion to no avail

I know of at least a couple of telecoms firms round here that are looking at new home work packages and pricing them up just in case it does become more common.

I’m still having to go in to work too. We’re classed as a key business, we are in a way, but on the scale of being important, I’d put us right at the bottom.
