A wins a win, and we badly needed it.

On the plus side, he's getting a bit of resilience into the side and we're slowly improving defensively.

We're dog shit going forward though. I don't want to be hard on Bruenker as he's clearly not a professional footballer. But he's a waste of a shirt.

Scrappy stuff tonight but a much needed 3 points.

O'Donnell -7- assured as always, delays with every cross and one great save in the 1st half.

Mellor -7- best game for us, defensively solid.

    McGowan -9- MOTM, won everything.

NKP -7- shaky at LB but solid at CB

Wood -7- solid, composed on the ball and decent in the air too.

O'Connor -7- did his job in midfield well enough and a fantastic goal line clearance.

LOB -8- he was everywhere putting a foot in and a great ball for Miller to win the pen.

Payne -8- changed our whole approach when he came on, some fantastic passes in that 2nd half.

Scannell -7- outstanding work rate but needs to work on his final ball.

Miller -7- starved of service but worked hard and won the pen.

Brunker -5- only negative really. Just didn't do anything.

Defensively we were great and it's great to have a 2nd clean sheet on the bounce. Going forward until Payne came on we were woeful, but 2nd half we would've had another couple if it were for better finishing.

Delighted for Hopkin and hopefully gives us momentum going into Saturday.

Ok so observations from this evenings game having watched on iFollow with a bottle of Malbec.

O'Donnell. Our best player. Were seriously in the brown stuff if he gets injured. Hes class p

    Defence:

Effective enough I guess this evening but christ, I have no confidence in then. Excellent goal line clearance by O'Connor but he doesn't half love putting his team mates under pressure with short or ill timed passes. McGowan solid enough.

    Midfield:

A lot of huff n puff but very little creativity. L O'Brien did a lot of chasing down, shame about Jim with his injury. Wood shouldn't be played in midfield. He was a passenger

    Forwards:

About as threatening as a wet wipe. No cutting edge, no sense that we might score from open play, lucky to have nicked those 3 points.

    Special mentions to:

Kai Bruenker: won precisely nothing tonight, contributed nothing and is clearly not a footballer. If he plays again for City I'll be gobsmacked.

David Ball and Jack Payne: Showed what talented players can offer in the final 3rd in glimpses. Are head and shoulders above the others with the ball at there feet, HAVE TO START EVERY GAME unless they both have broken legs

Sean Scannell: Needs to learn how to pass of cross. Has tonnes of ability to beat a man but doesn't show it enough and when he gets in good positions, tends to shoot from ridiculous angles with precisely nothing to show for it

Just hope Hopkin plays Doyle (when fit) Ball, Payne and Scannell and Miller in his first choice team from now on unless injury or suspension dictate otherwise. Theres no point having your most talented players on the bench and replacing them with the likes of Bruenker if he wants to achieve anything.

    That is all

Favourite moment of the night for me was this comment from Dryer -
    "Brunker's done well.......ridiculously looooooooooooooooooooong pause......with what he's got"

    Praise indeed.

Yeah. With what he's got. 2 legs. He runs a lot, it's just rarely anywhere near the ball.

"Drop Brunker". "Hope he doesn't play again"
Ummmmm....unfortunately, if he's not starting, he's definitely going to be on the bench - because we've got nowt else!

IMG_20181002_194206.jpg Workmanlike performance. O'C and McG were excellent tonight with Connor Wood also outtputa great shift in.

Grew into the game and confidence certainly improved and managed the game well in the second half.

I watched on ifollow too. Thought you were a bit harsh on Wood. Thought he was excellent.

Thought we looked a lot better organised. Thought Mellor & McGowan had their best games of the season.

Young O'Brien was superb. Never stopped running.

We pressed the ball really well at times. The work rate has improved massively under Hopkin.

We're 2 forwards short of a half decent team. The ball comes straight back, too often.

There is some real dross in this league. There may be enough other poor sides we can get away with this.

Great result, shows we can at least compete with the shite around us at the bottom.

That being said, realistically can’t see past a comfortable Sunderland victory on Saturday.
