Final score opened today with, "We dont know what consititutes handball anymore." and just what should refs be consulting pitchside screens over. VAR ain't working. If it was working, we would not be talking about it as the leading item on a show. Let's get back to talking about football.

"If the fans have made their view so clear, then we can not allow it to proceed." : Nuno Espirito Santo after VAR was actually on his side today.
(I wonder if MOTD will keep that bit in.)Interested Bystander likes this. -
Spurs v Man City.... 2+ mins the game goes whilst awaiting a decision. Suppose Spurs would have scored in those 2 mins there would have been uproar...... VAR needs to go.

More entertainment last night, VAR likes Maguire, great Zouma goal ruled out for a chelsea foul/push but its ok if your name is Fred.
Bet Giroud was on-side when Mount touches the ball but of course they cant put both players on the screen at the same time, so naturally another goal chalked off.
Only the amateurs at the FA would appoint a manchester referee* and a manchester VAR ref/stooge.
No wonder Frankie looked so glum!
Man u played well defensively, i'll give you that.

When you look at that image you can see how the camera's used for the technology could have been blocked.

In cricket, do batsmen "walk" anymore? Love progressive technology when it works, but when it doesn't, it just highlights how much of the personal aspect has been taken out of the game. Having said that, I wouldn't be suprised if the ref forgot to turn on his watch, or the hawk-eye bloke was checking his Tinder!
Reminds me of a time I was playing Sunday cricket, and was asked to step in for a few overs umpiring. I realised I hadn't brought out my stones to count the balls, so instead, managed to pick 6 daisies. I was holding them in my hand, when the gust of wind created by the bowler running in, blew them onto the ground. I bent down to pick them up, when of course I hear the cry "Ow is zaaaat?". "Not out!" said I (as is the norm in Sunday cricket when you're umpiring against your own batsman). The bowler turned round and saw me picking up the daisies, and went nuts because he said I wasn't even looking. "Going down leg" I replied. I don't think he spoke to me all gameInterested Bystander likes this. -
Offside is the ONLY place VAR actually works as its the only place it gives a definitive answer. Without it you could aks 100 refs and you wouldn't get a consensus because it then comes down to personal opinionStop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... They just only generally give us a view of a so single angle that generally gives the best view to try and simplify it, instead of giving us 10 angles all of which to the human eye will suggest a player is on or off by different amountsStop hovering to collapse... As highlighted in my image that's the main camera that is situated around the halfway line. One of either side of the pitch looking down the 18-yard box and two behind the goal. They are all used in conjunction (And yes the behind the goal ones do serve a purpose)
These cameras are specially calibrated for each stadium as slight changes in the position impact it. These are checked before every game. It also takes the pitched into account as they aren't actually flat for drainage reasons so they 3d scan it and the camber is taken into account. The algorithm also takes into account the height of each part of a players body. You will often see situations where it looks like a players head is furthest forward but the offside system is measured from the knee or the boot despite looking further back, its another of the optical illusions that happen with the camera positions and has to be accounted for. It's a massively complex setup to ensure accuracy but it is as accurate as it can be and more accurate than a person can be.
The only place it has some issues is the camera frame rate. They record in 50 frames a second, while that's higher than even High Frame Rate movies generally film in (which is usually 48 frames a second) for this use going even higher would be good, something north of 100fps, perhaps the 120fps cameras that Ang Lee has been using in his movies recently (Such as in the Will Smith Movie Gemini Man). The reason being that the higher the frame rate the easier it is to get that exact moment of contact, it's not massively a problem normally but on some of the highest calls if the contact happens between frames you can get a difference based on if you go with the frame before the contact or the frame after, 100 or 120 frames would make getting as close to the exact moment much easier as you have more frames to choose fromStop hovering to collapse... Yesterday's VAR controversy is nothing compared to todays.
VAR is supposed to stop mistakes like today and yet, because of the technology, they couldn't use common sense and see he was clearly onside.Faithful Bantam likes this. -
