If you read my post properly, I made no such assumption. I called you out for hypocrisy for decrying my name calling of right wingers whilst doing exactly the same yourself about Extinction Rebellion protesters. I made no comment at all about your political beliefs.

Not sure why I bothered commenting in the first place. You strike me of the type of person that does dismiss anyone elses views on political beliefs if they don't conform to your own, and you always want the last word. So on that basis, this is my last word on the matter

 

I suppose after 14 years of failure the Tories have to resort to fighting the next election on the "Trans" debate. The daft thing is if they believe there is an issue in this kind of thing then that has been brought about under their rule in the first place.

At no stage did I refer to your political beliefs. I merely pointed out that you criticised me for dismissing the right as ‘loons’ and then you did the self same thing by dismissing Extinction Rebellion supporters as ‘retards’.

You’ve made an awful lot of assumptions about me in several posts - most of them wrong. And then you criticise me for making a single assumption that I didn’t actually make. Maybe you should a) learn to read my posts properly and b) stop doing yourself what you unfairly criticise me for doing.

Exactly. The Tories have decimated our NHS and social care services. Schools are leaking teachers like sieves.They’ve made railway travel a luxury item. They’ve presided over the biggest drop in real wages in living memory. Housing has been made unaffordable for most young adults. The cost of basic food items has skyrocketed. Our economy has been stagnant for their whole tenure and capital investment (by their friends and party donors in big business) is minuscule. They’ve further exacerbated our economic decline by needlessly pulling us out of the biggest free trade bloc on the planet, largely as a measure to reduce immigration from Europe. But, instead, they are now importing 750,000 immigrants a year from Asia and Africa, in order to deal with workforce shortages they have created by their failure to train enough doctors, nurses, carers and other essential workers and because native Brits won’t do difficult thankless jobs for pittance wages.
But, despite their multiple failures on virtually every front, they seem to think that persisting with their ineffective and extortionately costly Rwanda fiasco and stoking up culture wars about trans issues (which are largely the result of the mental distress so many young people now feel) is somehow going to dig them out of the hole they’re now in. For most ordinary people, these things are the least of their worries.

 

You disagree with their tactics for trying to bring climate change issues more heavily into public and political consciousness. Fair enough. As I said, I’m not convinced by their tactics either. But they have a political viewpoint which they are entitled to hold. So why is it ok for you to completely dismiss that viewpoint by calling them ‘retards’ but not ok for me to dismiss extreme right wing Tory MPs as ‘loons’?

Apart from the bit about trans issues i can't disagree with any of that. Not sure why anyone of a young age would want to base their future in a country that is dying on its arse for most people who don't have the privilege of being wealthy.

Not sure i actually disagree with you or not to be honest. The more i read and see this trans stuff the more inclined i am to keep away from it. I tried digesting the stuff about it and wonder what the hell is going on. Too much weird freaky shit going on for me. You're born with a dick you're a man, you're born with a fanny you're a woman. Actually i remember i lass who used to live over the road from us when we were kids, ended up being a 'bloke', think he/she had some hormone therapy but didnt go as far as having a fake chopper. My brother then tells me he/she/they are in relationship with someone who did the opposite and one of thems was apparently pregnant. Crazy shit that.

 

From my time working with and training on mental health issues, one thing I’ve learned is that the way people express/exhibit mental distress varies historically, geographically and culturally. The norms of mental distress change over time - women no longer have ‘fits of the vapours’ as they did in Victorian times. People in South Asia tend to experience what we would call depression in more physical ways than us, such as stomach and chest pains. There is also a strong copycat element to it. The incidence of bulimia in Hong Kong - previously very rare - went through the roof when Princess Diana’s eating issues were plastered all over the world’s press. And remember that spate of youngsters, in a small area of South Wales, hanging themselves some years ago? Stopped as suddenly as it started.

I do believe that there exists a very small percentage of people with genuine body dysmorphia - ie they feel from childhood that they are in the wrong gendered body. But what we are seeing now is well beyond that. The numbers of teenagers claiming to be trans has rocketed in recent years, beyond anything seen before.

It’s undeniable that levels of mental distress amongst teens is currently very high, due to various factors, not least the pernicious effects of social media. I firmly believe that we are going through a historical phase where the unconsciously ‘fashionable’ way of expressing mental distress is through gender confusion. I don’t for one moment believe that all of these recent trans cases are genuinely gender dysmorphic and I’m convinced that most of them are mixed up, confused kids who will grow out of it. For that reason, I’m strongly against the idea of early hormone treatment and, especially, surgery. I believe that most of those railing against the unfairness of not being allowed hormones or surgery will later be grateful they weren’t given it.
