Exactly - anyone who suggests otherwise, doesn’t know football.

Fair do's - However take away Doyles penalty contributions, and his record ain't too rosy, for last season. ;)

    Fair enough.

As you yourself said though, they will want to listen to offers from elsewhere. So I’m assuming you agree such offers may be made?

So, using Devine as an example, would you want to stay at a club where you have been less of a figure for the last 4 seasons, or try to prove yourself elsewhere? You’re right about Anderson, but he joined a L1 club and although he knows he’s a shoe-in to start under Bowyer, what will he have been offered? I can’t see us offering silly money as we did under Rahic and now that we are in L2, he’ll probably get offered less than his last short-term deal. I can see a newly promoted club being able to match our deal and give him another chance of proving himself at a higher level.

    Just my feeling on this

What about his record before arriving at VP?

Of course, I haven’t dismissed the possibility of external offers - this applies to every available player.

Devine has already openly said he wishes to stay. If anything, it’s a perfect opportunity for him to put a marker down at his home-grown club in a league that is more his level. Win-win!

If all three players sign, they’ll be bit-part players in what will be another long season. GB knows this.

Ahhhhhh VP - The death knell for many a striker.
I quickly grew tired of either listening or reading about how many guilt edged chances Doyle missed.

OK ...... Let's take both Charlie Wyke and James Hanson ........
Combined, their fees were less than Doyles.
Combined, neither was a designated Penalty taker. (Insert Tony Mac, for one)
BOTH hit double figures with injury hit periods.

So tell me, how good is Doyle, again ? His record is little better than either Davis or Proctor, at VP.

I would have Davis in our league 2 side to play along side Doyle. He gives Centre Halves a tough time something we’ve missed the season just gone.

....and how many goals would Wyke/Hanson get in that team this season? A team that created absolutely nothing from either wing.

Doyle has scored more goals per game on average than Hanson and Wyke throughout their careers.

I thought Steve Davies did well to say he had limited opportunities. I'd certainly take him in this team if it was the SD of a few years ago.

    14 goals in 57app - I’ve certainly seen worse.

I agree ........ The point being that SD would have cost us next to buggerall. ;)

So about 1:4, around the same as Cullen, who is available on a free ...... (And probably lower wages, by some mark).

Surely a fairer assessment of a player would be to look at his career stats - the same stats that prove his goals-to-game ratio is better than Wyke and Hanson’s - as discussed.

If I was Devine and I had serious aspirations to make a career out of football for as long as possible, I wouldn't be sticking around to be a 'bit part' player for another season. The lad is nearly 22 years old and needs to be playing regularly if he stands any chance of furthering his career, not having the odd cameo appearance from the bench every couple of months. If he has belief in his ability and gets offered the opportunity of regular starts with a non league club, I think he needs to bite the bullet and take it. Yes, it will probably mean he has to take a considerable drop in wages but sometimes you have to go backwards to move forwards and sitting on the bench every week for us is not going to help him do that.

If it happens we must be the only team to have had three Duxbury’s to play for us.
