Judging O'Donnell based on the defence we had is
a bit hasty.We were wanting to sign him previously but
missed out on him.

The defence needs confidence in the keeper,the keeper
needs confidence in the defence.Chicken or egg?

Jesus are we going to have to read through page after page about ODonnell yet again ? It’s been done to death , go back about 20 or 30 pages and just read it again instead of brining it up.

 

Agree, to be honest he didn't start last season too badly (indeed was often fans player of the match if you check back) but gradually got worse as the season imploded, and as it did so the defence parted Moses style. O'Donnell started making more mistakes himself but their confidence was shot to threads and if there is one position that needs self confidence it is the keeper - he makes one *@?$ up and we lose the game whereas a striker can miss 4 or 5 chances but take the 6th and still be the match win

This is a difficult one to respond to. I agree with some but equally I’m confused by others.

Firstly, no we probably can’t afford to sign a 4th player for a chosen position and then not play them. So why sign Devine? He’s already got a number of midfielders in front of him, but yet the majority would want at least 1 more for his position.

I do agree about the competition for the CB place. This was the reason I think we need another. Doesn’t look like AO’C is moving on and many of us still have our doubts about him. This leaves Paudie as potentially the only ‘ready for the job’ defender we have, seen as the other 2 are unproven. I’d still like that “orrible, nasty centre half”, regardless of what happens to AO’C.

Finally, I’m confused by this “The issue isn't having him as 1 of 4 - because if he really isn't up to it, we can dip into the loan market”. Only we can’t and that’s the crux of my beef. Once the window closes, that’s it- no transfers and no loans. So if we start the season with Paudie and BRE and one gets injured at the end of August, so we have to use French and he’s not up to it, tough. We can’t do anything now until January.

 

Did I? I said that Bowyer said he’s a project and he is looking forward to working with him and developing him over the next 12mths. I also pointed out that Bowyer believes it will take time for him to get used to being full-time.

I’ve never said he isn’t ready because I know nothing about him. I’ve quoted Bowyer all the time

I’m assuming he failed to provide 1 keeper proven to be better than O’Donnell over a season, let alone career??!!!

 

The loan market remains open until end of august. So we have all pre-season and nearly a month of the full season to assess him. Then we have only 4 months until it opens again. If we can't accept having him as one of four, for 4 months, in League 2, when and how does he get exposed to the first team?

Theres always risk when you introduce a young player from the non leagues. But you have to be bold if you're going to do it.

I personally wouldn't have signed up Anderson, Devine and Colville. I'd have taken Colville, and the Devine signing may be heavily influenced by the requirements around having an academy player in your matchday squad. But I trust Bowyers judgement and it may be that all 3 are on cheap deals that dont intrude on his plans elsewhere.

 

As before, I completely agree. If you look at the centre back position in comparison to a front two you wouldn't want just three alternatives up front because if one gets injured you've no cover. Just the same at centre back. I think we need another centre back and another striker. The loan market changes have changed the landscape completely. We can shuffle people about for sure but that's just make do and mend. Our problem is we have too many midfielders who I can't see playing much of a part this season and not enough in other crucial positions. Why we've offered contracts to so many there is very puzzling.

 

Ask Man U fans what they thought of De Gea for the latter part of last season. Would they replace him though? Same goes for Aguerro at City. Unplayable at the start of the season but wasn't a shoe-in for the 2nd half. Again, would they want him replacing?
