How about a CB that can also play defensive midfield, that’s the cover for both positions.

Didn’t I read that they have 4wks/1mth and we can withdraw the offer? I’m assuming we haven’t exercised that clause based on him still training with us

No, we’d be signing a 1st team starter, not a squad filler. Admittedly, that may push someone else into filling the bench, but surely that’s the point of a squad? Always keeping everyone on their toes?

What if Bowyer wants to play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3? Surely having all 3 centre-backs on the park, he’d still want another on the bench in case 1 picked up an injury?

Anyway, this has been done to death. I appear to be in the minority and I accept that. I just hope nobody is crying if we pick up a couple of injuries and are forced to play a kid out of his depth or playing players out of position, whilst accepting Devine, Colville, Patrick et al are taking up seats in the stand...!

You could say that about any position though. Injuries to two strikers might mean we have to play Patrick, the bloke you're complaining is "taking up a seat in the stand".

At this level there are always compromises to make and given we have six players who can play centre half (even if two are just makeshift) then I reckon we have enough.

I still don't understand your constant reference about a "fourth" centre half though when we already have 4.

    P O' Connor
    A O' Connor
    Tyler French
    Richards Everton.

I'm sh1t at maths but even I can count that many.

Yeah, I thought it was something like that and seem to remember we did exercise it with C. Doyle last year?

But hasn't Bowyer described French as a 'project'? I might be wrong, but that doesn't sound to me like he thinks he is ready for regular first team action just yet.

If, at 18, he's not ready to be a fourth choice centre half at a team in the arse end of the football league then he's probably better off taking up gardening instead.

A 4th CB who can push the other 3 for a first team spot sounds great doesn't it? in an ideal world, I'd probably bring in a 5th.

The only slight inconvenience is that we don't have an infinite amount of funds and it's what other posters have been banging on about to you, but seemingly to no avail.

1st, 2nd and 3rd choice players will rightly hold priority. IF there is enough left in the pot once those positions have been addressed adequately, then I'm sure Bowyer will grant you your wish. More realistically though, we will have to compromise somewhere. If it's not at CB, then it'll be elsewhere.

It’s a lot harder now with transfer windows to judge how many players you need to get in. Before you could pick up a month loan to cover for injuries but now you’re stuck with what you’ve got

I’d say 4 is enough given our budget and the 5th could be Staunton? If he can’t do it in league two at his age, or get the chance to, he will never do it

As things stand I'd have Mellor as 4th choice with French as 5th. More than enough there!

That is the reality of lower league football you can’t afford to carry players just in case

Petrov beat me to it, but I’ll repeat.... French is not one for the here and now. He was signed as a project...!

But back to your point, I agree that for any position that we play 2, I think we should have 4 players to ensure we have cover. We currently have 5 strikers including Patrick and McCartan, but you don’t agree we need as many central defenders?

As for having players that can play there... you’re as guilty as many of us for complaining when we “put square pegs in round holes”...!

But yet you didn’t say similar about Devine despite him being 5th choice already and some still want us to sign another midfielder?

I get that fella and I’ve already said I get that funds may stop us getting a 4th 1st-team-ready defender. That all started again because I said I’d still like one, not that I expected one....!

But you keep saying we haven’t got infinite money, but don’t explain why, in that case, we have given a deal to Devine and offered one to Colville? Works both ways. How come this small budget can afford contracts for players in positions we don’t need cover, but not for a 4th central defender?

Anyway, you keep pushing me back on to this merry-go-round and then complaining that I won’t let it drop. So I will ‘let it drop’...!

What sort of quality are we going to get as 4th choice CB, knowing they are coming here to play a bit part. And if you say use money similar to Devine and Coalville. They surely can’t be on much more than a grand a week each.

So someone on small wages and who knows they won’t play most weeks?

    Much better using French more

How many fecking times do I have to say it.... why does signing another defender mean he is a bit-part player? If he’s good enough, why wouldn’t he start alongside Paudie and mean the others have to work even harder to win their place.

Our problem last season was that NKP and AO’C were guaranteed a place. I don’t want that situation again........... do you???
