Talks a lot of sense does Nicky, Alexander would do well to listen to him.

 

So too would Riley !!

 

If it's true and they come in for him, no way will he turn it down.

 

Just read about 'The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Football Is Wrong' by Chris Anderson and David Sally. According to the authors, clubs would do far better if they spent their available money on defence rather than marquee signings in attack. Statistically apparently, stopping teams scoring is much more effective than trying to score loads of goals. Money spent on expensive strikers is not cost effective according to their thesis. Might well be true, but anyway I still think we need two more nasty centre halves. Paudie would be fine for one but a real thug would be great. David Wheater would fit the bill if he chooses to leave Bolton, but I don't suppose he'd be cheap. I think Anthony O'Connor will be on his way and we might also want to play three at the back on occasions. Don't think our defensive rebuild is finished yet.

 

Fair enough. I still don’t see it myself (as things stand). We definitely need at least 1 more CB and another if A.O’Connor leaves. The fullback positions are decent, so long as they don’t get injured. But I’m not as convinced as you about the quality at the heart of our defence.

 

It still wasn’t an attack, regardless of whether you disliked my words or not.

What I don't understand though, that someone who has been as successful in the game as Butt, sees something in Riley and we don't. He also wants to bring him to a club that are on the up and a team that are looking to fast track their way up the leagues.
So how come Riley has potential in someone else's eyes, but can't even get in the squad for us?

 

Riley is a strange one. We were after him the season before we signed him so obviously we rated him. And so did ManU as they made him under-23 captain. And he didn't sign for us at first because he hoped to break into their first team. Surely he wouldn't have thought that without being told it was a possibility. Then he comes to us and in the few games I saw him he looked like he'd never played the game in his life. Something doesn't add up here. Young man with too miuch money gone off the rails? Wouldn't be the first.

 

I guess he must've looked okay at development level for man u. Sometimes promising youngsters don't manage to transition to 1st team level and the different level of physicality.

Really hope they sign him, we need rid. Barely played last season but got subbed at half time at least twice which says a lot.

 

I suppose if he gets a perm, at least we could all have a laugh

 

The fact he has been frozen out by successive managers means there must be something wrong with his character but in all fairness we haven’t seen enough of him to properly judge his ability

 

I think we saw enough to see that he was completely out of his depth.

 

Young players earning thousands per week to play in a glorified tippy tap league AKA the U23’s where hard tackling is ruled out “by gentleman’s agreement” and teams fly to away games (I’ve seen the Chelsea U23’s in Newcastle airport before) is a different world to Bristol Rovers away on a Tuesday night. He needs to take a long hard look at himself on the mirror, but will the chip on his shoulder block the view??

You can’t judge a player in his first full season in league football on half a dozen games .

 

The U23 league for the Premiership academies doesn't compare to the real game with people kicking you, being physical and not worrying about looking like a technician. If word gets out that you're a little pussy that can be intimidated you're in bother. Let's hope his balls have dropped in the break.
