Yes, we would have done much better with Jacob Hanson at right back.....

Too many loud mouths talking utter crap in this thread.

Tony McMahon is one of our best players. He is consistently our top assist-maker, and no, there aren't many players in League One who get higher figures and yes, some of them do take all their team's set pieces.

There's a lot of talk about corner-to-assist ratios and percentages, and they are all INCREDIBLY low.

    I mean, INCREDIBLY low.

Regarding set pieces in total, only 3 % ever lead to a goal.

Corners provide 0.32-0.38 goals per game, and that's at the top level where they're being delivered with consistent quality.

That's one successful corner every three games.

And they're not all direct, and therefore don't count as assists. That's goals from corners TOTAL.

If Tony McMahon couldn't take corners, he wouldn't have ten assists this season, or hit double figures virtually every season, generally always ending up in the top ten in League One.

To assume you could easily replace Tony is moronic, myopic, and typical of the modern levels of impatience currently blighting the game. Any top team wants a set piece taker that can deliver quality some of the time (not all of the time, because those players don't exist). That's why any side in League One serious about going up will have a real interest in McMahon.

If we don't have a real interest, we aren't serious about going up.

I wouldn’t trust him with a Muller Fruit Corner.

I’m saying you’re talking nonsense. If he had have left in the summer, there was nobody in the squad even close to his level to replace him.

Sadly, I think it will be very hard for James Hanson to get another league club now. Is he out of contract now?

Back on thread topic, I think Tony McMahon will have plenty of offers this Summer. We know now that Scunthorpe, Blackburn and Peterborough all seriously considered him; all of these are decent league one sides. He has his faults, he is a lower league footballer after all, but he is one of our better players.

Shame he didn't leave in the summer also.

You starting to see why we finished 11th.

To many rubbish players in each position.

I think your last sentence is part of the answer. Everything about Hansons game was about the physical threat he brought to the game. Knowing how much punishment he has taken and injections just to get him through games when under Parky has to me diminshed that threat. Reminds me of Stuart Fielden at the Bulls, once his physical threat started to drop because of age and injuries he was just a bog standard rugby player, his whole game was built on that physicality, he didn’t have the ball playing prop skills like a James Graham. Same with Hanson, take away the physical side and he isn’t good enough for league 1 where the players you mention were.

Can you explain why Parky considered him for Bolton, McCall preferred him to the very good Darby, Mowbray wanted him at Blackburn, Scunthorpe wanted him and now Peterborough

In case you hadn't noticed all these teams ended above us

So either they're worse than us as they want him, but apparently he's not good enough for us. Hence we must be better than them. Great news!! Roll on next season

Or you're writing before thinking, yet again

    Absolutely spot on.

And let’s not forget that, having delivered the perfect cross from a corner or free-kick, it’s not his fault the ‘receiver’ then directs their efforts wide. How many times have we seen the likes of Vince, NKP, Killa, Dieng and Wyke head straight at the keeper or put it over/wide.

Had they been more competent, the assists rate of McMahon would have been even greater. I like him as a City player. But I can’t see him still being here come August, regardless of whether we offer a new deal or not.

One could argue that the reason those teams finished above us was precisely because they didn't have him in their teams.

He isn’t shite. There is a reason some of the big hitters in this league were looking for his services in the summer and in January. You’re showing just how clueless you are.

Always polarises opinion does McMahon. Not sure we will ever know what really went on in January that led to McMahon being unavailable to the end of the transfer window. Fact is in the time he's been at the club he has been good value for us. An influence on and off the pitch who always puts a shift in. I'm not overly keen on his theatrical antics and there are certainly better players around league 1 in his respective positions. But if we don't keep him on the books i'm sure someone in our division will pick him up, managers seem to like his dressing room influence.

How desperate are some of our supporters. I wonder if anyone will take a risk on a player who has a lot of injured miles on the clock?

    I'm saying that's the problem.

He's shi&e and his back up is even more shi@e.

Too many shi&e players in each position at the club.
