Playing a 5 3 2 would still allow us to play possession football and would a.low the fullbacks to get forward giving us the width we lack
So then a back five of Mellor A and P OConnor Everton and Longridge

Where does Scannel fit in though? Our highest paid and probably most effectively outlet?

I agree but Bowyer likes to play possession football and two in the middle makes it difficult

If he wants to play possession football, he'll need midfielders who can pass the ball. Anderson cant, and Gibson has a lot to learn about picking the right pass at the right time.

If he wants three in midfield he needs width and that means getting the fullbacks forward

For me Park i would sack off Mellor and play Henley right back.
    Mellor is too soft.
At least Henley started to put himself about and show some balls.
Mellor tip toes through games for me

This is doing nothing for confidence either so you'd rather be a point better off than not

Really? Cambridge, Grimsby, Port Vale and Crawley all won one and lost one of their first two games of the season last year and ended up finishing 21st, 17th, 20th and 19th respectively. Being a point better off at this stage of the season didn't help them did it?

But only conceded from a set piece which Scannell could do absolutely nothing about. Nothing to do with system. The fact we could and maybe should have scored another couple once he was on after playing 70 mins without creating a fart apart from the goal means he must start if fit.

Technically we could go the season unbeaten but get relefated with 46 draws. But at least our confidence will be high.

    A set piece.
    From a corner.
    That they won.
    While completely dominating play.

Which they won on the other side. They had dominated even more so before scannell came on. Was only when Scannell came on were we able to put any sort or pressure on them.

I'm not blaming Scannel. I'm blaming the formation change. We were much wider open.

Just caught O'Connor's post match interview and he seems to thinks it's a positive that we are still unbeaten so it looks like for the defence at least, it is doing something for confidence.

    Positives:

    *Solid defensively.
    *Good commitment from the players.
    *Vaughan and Dondaldson look threatening.
*Something to work with if we can sign 2 quality players and find a system to suit.

    Negatives:

*Playing a Right Back at Left Back.
*Relying on Henley and Mellor to provide width.
*Throwing Gibson in at the deep end when key areas of his game still need to be developed
    *Anderson- not good enough.
*Employing Palmer as a defensive midfielder.
    *No defensive midfielder.
    *No left winger.
    *Scannell on the bench.
    *Doyle in the hole.
    *No creativity
    *Little strength in depth.
*Ismail, McCartan, Longridge, Reeves, Akpan, Riley and Robinson all unavailable.
    *Bowyer- stubborn.

Agree with all but your final point. I think he is playing a waiting game and trying to ensure we remain reasonably hard to beat until he brings in some creative midfielders and a few injuries clear up.

A positive I can make is these first two games have been the perfect games for bowyer to understand this league and use them as sort of trial games.

Cambridge was what 99% of clubs will come to VP and do. We need to learn how to break down a deep sat defence.

Grimsby was how most sides in this league play in terms of their direct play, set pieces and physicality. We dealt with it ok defensively, could do better.

The next home game (Oldham) and next away game (Stevenage) will be the tests to see if Bowyer has learnt anything from these games and know that what we've done so far offensively hasn't worked.
