Just another frustrating interview from a player on his way out.
Perhaps Mr Smallwood would like to tell us how he intends to beat the first man from a corner that his something he could put right and leave the pitch condition to those who make a living in that profession.

Not sure about the cost. But if Spennymoor FC can afford to:
- Purchase
- Maintain and run with the costs.
The Solution
Eight Matchsaver Air Roller Pitch Covers were delivered pre-assembled and ready to be deployed at Brewery Field. When needed the eight covers are inflated and deployed side-line to side-line by the ground-staff with sandbags used to keep the covers in place.
Waterproof plus Germination
Waterproof, rot proof, tough and long-lasting, the pitch cover material provides a light transmission rate of 70% providing excellent germination properties for natural turf.
Storage
After use, the ground-staff deflate the air roller covers and keep them next to the pitch in readiness for the next time they are needed.
It has been a well known fact that the Brewery Field Pitch has been an issue with water logging and frost for a few seasons and with the level of football being played by the club it was imperative that action was taken to ensure as many games as possible be played and not postponed.
Matchsaver covers enabled us to meet that demand through immediate delivery and ease of deployment to the playing surface aligned with great after sales support.
It strikes me, that something like this system is worth inquiring about. -
If the underlying issues were resolved in 2018, and the actual turf looked decent until the end of last year, then the main issue has to be stopping short term extreme weather conditions impacting on the pitch and then exacerbating the wear and tear features.
From my perspective that is stopping too much water soaking into the pitch. Modern, effective covers, which are inflated and provide a simple dome would protect the pitch from flooding. It is a lot cheaper to provide soakways, gulleys on the edge of the pitch which connect to main drains. Like the sprinkler systems they could be covered over just before the match started.
With frosts forecast, then again the covers could be inflated and some warm air circulated. Yes there will be cost, but the cost of late cancellation of matches must run to the tens of thousands.
Expect to see a drop of say 2,000 plus from City POTD and Notts County fans seeking a refund. That in simple terms will be a loss of £40,000+ to the club. There will be other costs with a late cancellation, l am sure that the stewards, catering staff, food, loss pro rata in other sales on a match day will mean City will have lost out on a sizeable income.
l posted earlier a ground cover system once again, here is a testimony of the system working. “
This is one of many occasions that the ‘Moors’ have used the air roller covers to make sure matches were played on time, fixtures that otherwise would need to be re-scheduled with all the costs and potential loss of revenue that entails.
Spennymoor Town FC play in the Vanarama Conference League North, the sixth tier of English football.
Located in the hills of County Durham the town gets more than its fair share of snow, ice, and plenty of rain during winter. The football club had struggled for years with many matches postponed at their home ground of Brewery Field because of waterlogged and frozen pitches. Determined to act and alleviate the problem the club purchased set of waterproof Matchsaver Air Roller Covers in December 2018.
If Spennymoor can afford to purchase and run the system, then surely City can? Sometimes the mantra of cost, is touted too loudly! The old saying of ‘Penny wise, pound foolish’, comes to mind.Storck, Stafford Bantam and Onside like this. -

Richie Smallwood has come out and blasted the pitch as being the worst in the EFL and its not good enough having to play on it every week.
Well done Richie for not holding back. Its time someone came out and said it.
It's not good enough for Sunday league football.

I have just read the Smallwood interview and to be fair to him he said it was a small part of playing football. He said the ball didn’t bounce. However, what did alarm me was the psychological impact it appears to have on the players ie planning. Getting ready for the match as they set off from home. Not knowing whether they would be playing or not! We are the same a lot of fans just gave up on attending as they didn’t know whether to go to the expense of travelling and investing in the emotion of wanting the team to win, and all the other stuff that goes through your head before a match. You only have to look at the pitch to be worried about it playing up. No matter how much we try to excuse it away, we can’t, the grounds staff have done an incredible job, but they are not miracle workers. They are providing the best playing surface they can given the cards they have been dealt. However, I did notice the pitch did look greener, so the grass has started to grow.
We just have to find a solution to our pitch problems, that can only be done by experts, we cannot stop the rain, but we can mitigate against it damaging the pitch. Starting with a full investigation into the problems that have occurred and suggestions on how to solve the problem. No half measures. Plus you could make any investigation report available to fans, now wouldn’t that be novel?Fordy117, CrosbyBantam and SteveC like this. -

Genuinely, I think what Smallwood has said is just one part of the psychological make-up of the players when playing at home. When we're playing a big team/higher division (Wrexham/Wycombe/Stockport) they just focus on getting up for that challenge and tend to perform alright. When it's a little/poor team (FGR/Donny etc.) they assume they are going to win, mentally slack-off, and then things like the pitch etc. creep into their thoughts.
If GA really wants to fix the issue of playing at home I suggest he hires a sports psychologist to work with the players as clearly something in the players' mentality isn't right.Ulysses S Grant, Onside and Faithful Bantam like this. -
