We could have signed geff horsefield, when he was at Halifax, but they thought 250k was too much. Then we wasted 1.2 million on isaha rankin from arsenal, who had never played a first team game.

 

To be fair they signed Lee Mills as the powerful centre forward that summer followed by Windass a bit later. Both did well at City so I don’t have much complaints about missing out of Horsfield.

Rankin was one of Richmonds examples of getting giddy with money in his pocket. Allegedly Jewell though the offer was going to be £100k.....cue his shock when it was £1m.

We’d almost signed Samassi Abou from West Ham. It’d all been agreed and he went back to the Ivory Coast and contracted malaria before coming back to sign, thus it fell through. Richmond tried to wait to see if he’d recover but there was no way the medical staff were going to give it the go ahead. Richmond panicked and went and paid crazy money for Rankin (which should’ve served as a warning for what was to come a couple of years later). They had been sniffing after one of Crewe’s forwards who’s name I forget, but they were mightily pissed off we’d already signed Whalley and Westwood so refused to sell despite Richmond offering over the odds.

 

I stand corrected....we were in for Rodney Jack from Torquay but Crewe outbid us. This drove the price up with Crewe using the money for Whalley and Westwood to offer more than we were prepared to.

I knew the story involved Crewe and Westwood / Whalley. Amazing what a google search helps you remember.

 

Lee Gregory. Out of our price bracket when he did eventually leave but was playing really well long before he got his move. Watched him a lot on BT sport when they covered non league (Don't know if they still do) and he was far too good for that level.

Paul Robinson, apparently was going to sign when Clarke and Walsh were injured, Worsnop was it froze and Fat Nev played. Leeds said he couldn’t play in the game against them.

He did; the other was striker Trevor Senior who was with Reading and a one in three scorer. Ultimately the two of them might have helped get us over the line to Div1. Townsend inparticular went on to have a good career at Norwich; Chelsea, Villa and represented ROI in World Cups.
