It just puts us one month behind in the search for key player for that position. A lot of the likely candidates will have decided on elsewhere probably come down to a loan

But there's nothing two faced about it Kev. The lad simply got a late offer which, because of the contract details and the club involved he couldn't refuse the offer. This ain't Nahki Wells levels of skullduggery, its simply a case of a club having a better hand to play than us and playing it before it was too late. A case of an agent doing his job to the best of his ability.

 

I remember him from the Sunderland series and thought he was a bit of a snowflake. Always with the physio's, always struggling with something, it seemed a mixture of physical and psychological with him. When things were tough, and they were for the mackems during that period, it felt like it was too much for him. Don't doubt his ability but if the pressure was on I'm not sure he's the roll your sleeves up and dig in type of character we might need. I think our mentality as a group let us down last season so for me I'm not too disappointed he's not coming. On ability alone he would be a yes, but if things got tough would he be one you'd hang your hat on to drive us forward? I'm not sure about that aspect of his character. It's a shame but maybe it's for the best

 

It’s alright saying we don’t want his type, but as Park says it’s a very competitive market this year. If we want the better players in the division they’re likely to be in demand and that means having to compete with other clubs and be will to beat them on wages. It’s okay saying we only want players who want to be here, but the better players will make the most out of their careers and that means taking the best offer on the table. Even £500 a week makes a big difference at this level we aren’t talking the PL. if we really aren’t going to accept mediocrity then we will have to literally put our money where our mouth is. It’s certainly interesting being a City fan if nothing else.

Do you think we just set our sights on Williams and then that’s it? No back up plan for if he decided not to sign or if he failed a medical?

They will have a list of many players that have been identified as suitable for the team and had a preference. This isn’t 2008 when we would hope Oldham would have someone they could loan to us.

I know it sounds stupid to say now, but alarm bells were ringing in my head when The Sun was reporting a League 2 transfer story, to Bradford City no less. Williams is a class player, very good technically and has that drive that a Bradford City midfield has lacked since the partnership of Josh Cullen & Lee Evans half a decade ago.

He is an attacking midfielder by trade, but we already have Walker in that role so many on here suggested that Williams would be deployed alongside Smallwood. Smallwood is an effective destroyer type of player, but he needs legs around him, I dont think Williams would of been that player so im not overly fussed

What does worry me is who we bring in instead. Bradford City aren't exactly known for pulling a rabbit out of the hat when resorting to Plan B or Plan C in terms of incoming transfers. That being said, its evident that Hughes an co are willing to splash the cash on a position which was ultimately our downfall last season. If we can get a quality box to box player in, then I won't really remember this saga in the near distant future

I still think we should have a good to at bringing Regan Hendry to the club. He's a good age, a proven league winner at this level and was Tranmere's stand out player (even though they were poor) when they came to Valley Parade. Plus he's a Scot, so location may not be an issue further north.
