Not at all. They have a lower capacity ground than us. They have announced just hitting 5,000 Season Ticket sales. Currently they are smaller than us.
However size doesn’t necessarily matter, we were ‘bigger’ than Stevenage, Northampton, Orient and Carlisle. The ‘size’ of the club doesn’t necessarily correlate with success.
However I agree with your comments about history and fame.

Saw his top 10 goals last season other day. Made most from absolutely nothing.

    Bad example!

Brentford have used xG to drive their recruitment for years and have continually sourced undervalued players from it. Private companies invested millions in the concept many years to garner the data.

nowadays it is just one of a number of metrics analytical teams at clubs all around the world use to monitor player performances in matches and drive recruitment.

People can scoff all they want about xG (not directed at you Petrov, loads on here deny it’s value) but it and similar stats have been successfully used in the game for years and will continue to do so.

not opening up a can of worms with it again but I urge anyone who hasnt read the ‘xG philosophy’ to read it. Copies will be cheap on Amazon these days!

Exactly BL's point. The xG of those would have been so low that it would have said the chance of scoring was very low. What the data are suggesting is that Stockport created lots of chances in the penalty box where the chance of scoring was high - they scored some and missed some.

The data tells us that based on our chances created we "over scored" more than we would be expected to.

Simply, really, we all know we didn't create many good chances and we need to make more! We don't really need any xG data to tell us that!

Way too deep for me BB. As you suggest yourself , it’s what and how many end up in the onion bag, not how the ball got there and by who. It’s obviously a game of percentages, not pretty on the eye, but it can work for some with lesser quality players… The Wimbledon of old springs to mind?

It's why they have experts at clubs explaining the data to the managers. The data on its own is useless, it needs implementing in systems. What xG tells you is wether your team is set up properly to create those important chances. If your missing them it's easy to spot the weak link and change it, a lot harder to change the system to create the chances. Because creating those chances is the most important stat you need.its what gets you promoted in the long term. And the major reason we lost the playoffs.

Completely reliant on Andy Cook having a freak season. He won't do that again, some of his individual goals were top level stuff.

Maybe Ryan Sparks should snuggle up to Matthew Benham rather than Darragh MacAnthony ?.

Yes, Cook had an amazing season but I doubt very much that it will be replicated this coming season. We won't be able to rely on him again to the same extent. If we are to be promoted automatically, we'll need in the order of 70 or so goals. Anything less and we'll be be relying on the luck of the play-offs again for promotion or worse. I struggle to see how that will be achieved without further quality coming into the squad combined with a change in our mindset and tactics

If you're questioning our transfer activity, Stevenage have just signed their third Thompson of the window.

That won't make things confusing, at all.

We can strike another “old boy returning” off the list

Tom Cleverley has announced his retirement due to ongoing injury issues.

    I agree with you.

Let's say Cook gets 20. If we're playing with two up top then the other person(s) need to get 10-20 as well.

    We're 30-40 short.

Walker? Pattinson? Chapman? They need to get 20 between them.

    We're still short...

    Defenders chip in with 5-10.

We're not far off now but we need more of the ball around the opposition's penalty area and people more willing to shoot.

    Fair analogy.

A major fundamental weakness last season was defensive height , especially with Crichlow in the side ( Not blaming him solely before anyone suggests I am) .
Both ends were affected, set pieces on the offensive side as well as a critical weakness at defending set pieces at the other end. Reduce the defensive fallibility by 5 and increase the offensive one by 5 , that’s 10 goals positive straight away!

Without 2 more decent signings we are looking at a midtable finish at best.
