For sure. I'm not saying clubs don't take advantage of it, but for sure it's not the leg up for a promotion advantage it used to be maybe 10 years ago because the money in the prem has sky rocketed compared to the champ.

Sheff had to go up last season because of their financial situation. Parachute payments since their last relegation are the only reason they weren't in administration. Hence they aren't spending a thing this season and banking all the TV money they have to be able to have a base to build from in the champ. Clubs are seeing it as a safety net these days. Fairly certain the EFL wanted parachute payments increased because they don't balance like they used to.

 

Feels like there was an expectation that X number could be our budget based on the new-ish FFP in L2.... but the actual budget is way under that.

Holding back? Unwilling to spend after the Edin show? Maybe not trusting the Hughes/Gent recruitment team will £3m+? But for sure, Sparks has contradictory statements this season around the playing budget.

 

Once again @Dennis spot. I read that and thought the same. We should be having every penny we can to enhance our playing budget. For instance we could have a 1st class striker and midfielder? I thought I must have done my maths wrong and or the behind playing field budget is very high and or someone is taking profits.

And the comments about the strength of L2 are laughable. This is as poor as I've seen it, generally. The 2013 team was much, much stronger and only just scraped into the playoffs.

Everyone seems to have got down on their knees and be praying at the altar of Notts County and Wrexham because they're so strong we couldn't possibly hope to compete. Despite between them spending a combined 20 previous seasons in the National League.

As others have said. Sparks has confirmed our turnover to be £8m+. We can have a playing budget of up to £4.5m so we're spending way below what we're allowed to. Similar to the COVID season where Sparks held back prior to new spending rules being put in place (which never materialised) whilst the likes of Bolton smashed their signings (and look at them now).

Accepted we may have higher overheads meaning we can't reach the 4.5m budget and it may also not be prudent to spend to that level, but someone somewhere is making a proactive decision to spend far less than were allowed to. It doesn't tie up with a desire to get out of this league and it very much holds us back.

 

Spot on. We fundamentally lack ambition and strategic leadership on all things football. And I'm convinced Rupp is taking out some form of dividend.

Probably because we can't afford it. We made a loss of 300k last season, if we put it up to £4.4m who is paying for that as we'll be losing around £2m per season? Other clubs spend what they do as they have an owner that will gift the club millions a season, if that stops then them clubs are in huge trouble like what happened with Wigan, Derby and Bury.
