You have to smile when playing surface gets mentioned, back in those day the majority of pitches were like that, certainly Valley Parade was.
Jimmy Mcllroy said he'd never play at Valley Parade again when he came in an FA Cup game with Burnley, but he did several years later when manager of Oldham Athletic, and of course we had a bit of banter about his earlier comment.

The playing surface is a ridiculous excuse, you would think we were wallowing in knee deep mud rather than just having a couple of bare patches of soil and some small areas that year up.
