Explain this to me please because I'm really struggling.

How does staying on your line "make the goal smaller"?

Okay chaps, these two stills were taken from two different games where we employed two different goalkeepers.

One has been criticised on this forum, the other has been praised for commanding the area and instilling confidence in his defence, and yet they are IDENTICAL. One is from Scunthorpe (O'Donnell's last game), the other is Carlisle (Hornby's last game).

    Note the similarities:

    - Canavan beaten in the air both times.
    - Both aerial challenges on the six yard line.
    - Both keepers in nearly the exact same position centrally.
    - Both keepers in nearly the exact same position on the goal line.

Not being funny, but is someone going to explain why O'Donnell is getting criticised in this thread for conceding the SAME goal Hornby conceded? Credit to 'Adam Vaux' for the stills.

Possibly because O'Donnell is permanently rooted to his line and never seems to compete for a crossed ball?

    This thread is confusing

One critic says he's permanently on his line, the next reckons he should stay on his line, which is it?

He blocked at least two one on ones by coming off his line yesterday.

All those pictures do is confirm to me that Hornbys positioning was wrong for Carlisle's third.

I mentioned it on the matchday thread but hadn't seen it back since.

Because you only come off your line to narrow the angle as the forward approaches, Watch top keepers and this it what is coached because it drastically reduces the forwards chance of scoring, Watching TV games you will see forwards running through free and the keeper not coming out until around the 6 yd box and blocking it usually with body or legs

All I know is that we had been terrible at defending corners for ages, with RO'D in goal. He always stays on his line, even when the ball is there to catch or punch. That changed with Hornby in goal. We looked far more secure because he claimed crosses that were in his zone. Yes, he got it wrong against Carlisle, but that exception doesn't alter the fact that the defence looked more organised generally and much better defending corners with Hornby behind it.
I don't think it's coincidence that after two games with RO'D we are back to the bad old days of he and AO'C arguing about whose fault it was we've conceded. That didn't happen with Hornby. I don't think the defence feels confident with RO'D. And as for him being captain, that's madness.

If AOC and ROD are arguing, but AOC and Hornby DIDN'T, doesn't that imply that AOC takes over when Hornby is in goal rather than the other way round?

Wouldn't it be likely that the defenders have LESS trust in Hornby so they try to put MORE blocks in?

If that argument was going to hold water, I'm not sure it's because Hornby is a better organiser - maybe the argument should be that if ROD is in goal, there are too many voices (too many cooks spoil the broth).

I'm not advocating this argument at all, but I think that's more feasible than Hornby being a master strategist.

My criticism of ROD is his possession based play rather than comparable saving ability, having one modus operandi and an apparent inability to quickly read and call the back line and pass out from the back. Not the only issue, but his constant long ball appears to be one of the factors contributing to the lack of cohesiveness in us playing football and increasing bouts of head tennis, which we rarely win.

ROD certainly more suited to Bowyerball than Hornby, and I only noted one pass out from the back to a defender on Tuesday.

I've never seen Hornby pass it short. He's always booted it long. In fact there was a statistical comparison in a WOAP article the other week between the two which said just that.

Spot on. I said the same on the night after the Scunny game. Yes he made a couple of saves, not knocking him for that , but he seems to have completely lost his confidence in coming for crosses. Free kicks from wide and corners I get the sense he’s decided “I’m staying” when the defence thinks any reasonable keeper should come. This creates utter confusion. Yes Hornby needed a kick up the rear as there were a couple of things he’s got wrong. He’s young, but knock his confidence by dropping him??
This is not a like for comparison, but our long lost player Mr Pickford drops some belters. I don’t see Southgate worrying too much.

Sorry but O’D isn’t the answer long term, so as the season probably pesters out PLAY HORNSBY. We have nothing to lose yet gain him lots of experience....just as we did with Pickford!

If someone is clean through keepers don't stay on their line until the striker reaches the 6 yard box. We'll have to agree to disagree but I find what you're suggesting bizarre.

No two criticisms in this thread have been remotely the same.

I think there must be quite a few Richard O'Donnell's playing, with our fanbase all watching a different one.

A criticism of ROD's play is his technique when faced with a one on one situation with an opposing player.
When the shot is taken, instead of attempting to make himself big by spreading himself, ROD turns his back on the ball.
Watch highlights of him, he does it often.
In the first half v Scunny, a shot was taken, he luckily saved it with his back, he had no idea where the ball was.
He really needs to develop a better method of goalkeeping in these situations.

Neither is the finished article. I think their close-in shot-stopping is very similar but Hornby is better with shots from distance and much better on crosses. I also dislike O'Donnell's histrionics and, for some unfathomable reason, the defence looks much shakier when he's playing.

All the players we could have a go at in the team and we’re talking about o donnell , a keeper most clubs in division 1 or two would love to have in their team
