Always disappointing to see a defeat, however, I read very little into preseason games. Sometimes we can look amazing and other times clueless, which is often reflective of the experimental nature of formations and personnel etc. at this time of the season.

Starting the season on the wrong end of a 5-2 thumping by Crawley Town on opening day would be a very different matter however.

 

It was 2-2 before mass changes against second favourites for the league above, let’s not throw the baby out of the bath water because we conceded 3 late goals in a friendly after mass changes.

I worry about some of our so called fans when I see comments like below, the guy had two bad breaks I'd suggest the first few games were all about getting through mentally, unbelievable Jeff as Kammy would say.

pointon impressed me - first time I’ve seen him but that left slot could be his if he plays like that for longer vs Boro? Seemed confident in himself and put through some lovely balls for his teammates to cross in. Wasnt afraid to run at oppo - we need more of that.

hughes will soon stifle that creative talent, lol, but he looks exciting for now!

 

Our defending has generally been very good under Hughes, but you might be right about conceding a few more.

I never bought into the idea Hughes had 'the shackles' on us, we just didn't have a good enough, mobile enough, or creative enough first XI last season.

And we still made the play offs, and could have got the autos.

Let's hope we don't become too free and easy at the back, or that will cost us just as much as a failure to score in crucial games did last season.

We should be aiming to win the first match and every match.

That's ultimately what got Orient promoted. They won 9 of their first 10 and drew the other. They got ahead of the pack and then just achieved the points everyone else did to stay ahead. We should be trying to do the same.

Hull the better side but a good work out and just what we needed

 

Agreed some were very harsh at the end of last season, it’s like some think it’s a computer game where players don’t get affected by injuries and just come back the same.

 

I think we should all wait until we are playing league matches before deciding how well we are likely to do this season. Hull were a very fit and mobile side who had good interplay and fast passing but yet didn't wallop us.

 

You do understand the opposition today is much harder than those we will face in L2?

Bizarre to make this assumption from a friendly.

 

In my opinion Walker has to play in the centre of midfield or not at all. Having him stuck out on the left hand side of midfield meant he was hardly in the game.

 

For a preseason friendly that’s terrific and would shame many L2 league fixtures! Well done all, inc our visitors.

 

Entertaining match for those that went and some decent positive attacking play from City.

I'm going to say now, contrary to the doubters who are still to be convinced of this man's talents....... (Why?)
I think he will get close to last year's total or even surpass it with the better service I expect him to get this season. There now I've said it!

Can’t see how it’s been a shambles a good weeks work in Spain followed by a match against a premiership standard team. Two games against teams with champions players where we aquittted ourselves well. And in a final warm up on the eve of the season against a team who have done well so far against league opposition. Yes it has highlighted our weaknesses as well as strengths just hope we learn the lessons. Bit Shambles? No

 

Agreed. Stubbs and Platt had a great record when they played together last year and all the defensive unit needed was a new LB. Now we've got a new system where Halliday is not really effective, we have CBs who can't play in two of the three available positions and we still don't have a viable option at LWB/LB.
