I'm sure you can see his point. You can't judge a DM on goals and assist. That's a tiny part of his job.
A better judgment would be goals conceded.
How did we do on that one?

If he doesn't contribute going forwards then he's got to contribute elsewhere. The simple fact is Gilliead is a hard worker and half decent tackler but that's it. He's extremely poor in a number of areas, average in a substantial number and good in only a couple. Can we not do better even at L2 level?

Harrogate's not a bad shout, given they are turning into the new City c team (Carlisle being the b team).

I really don't have the fecking time to trawl through stats to prove my point. You know exactly what point I am making, I won't repeat myself on that

What I will say - yet again - is that a lot of our fans need to remember we are a 4th division side. Quality is only seen in 1 maybe 2 players in a squad. Did any of the Stevenage players stand out to you? And before you state the obvious Piergini - not really. He was just a defender who knew how to get in a good position to score. Did Hoskins impress you for Northampton? No me neither, he was shite against us

    Well it is.

1 goal and 1 assist is a disgrace.

Luckily, I'm on lunch and love a stats dive. Alex Gillieads season compared against every other CM who had 15 or more L2 games was.....

Successful tackles per game, he is joint 9th with 2.6 per game. Sylla at Hartlepool was top with 3.6 followed by Moxon at 3.4. Smallwood was also joint 9th.

He was also 9th for attempted tackles per game at 3.7. McEachran at Swindon attempted the most tackles per game at 4.8, Moxon 2nd at 4.3. Smallwood was 13th with 3.5.

He was 47th for interceptions at 0.7 per game. Ashley at Colchester was highest with 2.6 per game, followed by Eastmond at Sutton with 2.2. Smallwood was joint 15th.

He was also 47th for fouls committed per game with 0.9. Smallwood was 24th.

Statistically across all metrics, Smallwood was actually the 3rd best midfielder in the league behind Moxon & Watt. Gilliead came in 37th.

I comparing his role not the quality. I have said what he does. He win tackles, covers other players and when he gets the ball he gives to the danger players. A lot of what Cullen did went unnoticed and there were a fair few people complaining that he didn't score enough.

It's about how they fit a formation and a manager's strategy. Take the very talented Josh Cullen, has the odd goal and assist to his name but will be playing premier League footy next season. Managers know what he does well. And I guess it's the same with the likes of Smallwood and Clayton.
Football is never down to the ability of the individual, it's about the manager getting the line up right and the players fitting into it.Hence Chelsea spending an absolute fortune and then struggling to score.
Stats will always be used to suit a narrative

Neither are crap, they just aren't the best when placed together. Same with our fullbacks. In 4-2-3-1, they are primarily there to defend. Attacking output is a bonus. If the six in front of them can't do the creative bit then thats the bit that needs to be addressed. Now if they were wingbacks that's a different story.

You shouldn't have to trawl. These "best midfielders in the world" should slip right off the tongue you would have thought.

It was a daft post so I called it out as I knew he wouldn't be able to make one. Simple as that really.

I generally agree with most of the point, I just didn't agree with the sensationalist way he tried to make it.

No surprises for me there, Ridehalgh has let no-one down. I expect the following to also be moved on during the summer if an opportunity arises. Fully expect Songo'o to rejoin Morecambe and Threlkeld to go into non-league.

I'm certainly not particularly enamoured by the retained list (Cook aside)
Similar to my feelings last close season, when we were told mediocrity isn't an option, then MH's offered Angol a contract.
More of the same even at this very early stage.

He's a block tackler. He's not strong in the tackle. He doesn't go into a tackle to clear the ball out but to try and block the ball and create a turnover. Often, that results in the other team going past him and carrying on with their attack.

Would you play him ahead of Gary Jones and Nathan Doyle? Course you wouldn't because he isn't a central midfielder and doesn't have the qualities they have.

His best attributes are his stamina - he can run as well at the end if games at the start - and his ability to carry the ball up the pitch but his decision making is awful, his passing is either inaccurate or too firm and he has no idea when to shoot and isn't good at it either.

    Cool.

    OK. Name one.

And I bet when you do everyone will say - correct, but his role wasn't to create assists or chances but to do x or y.
