I think regardless of what league we are in, Cook Stubbs & Clayton are no brainers for 2 year contract offers (maybe 1 year for Clayton if we are in L1?)

If staying in L2, then certainly Gilly and possibly Eisa - 2 year offer

The rest of them can happily do one for me

Think Cook and Gilly are the only ones who get offered one if we go up, Clayton will if we are still in L2. Cant see Ridehalgh getting another deal if we go up, maybe if we stay in L2 but with all the people we've tried there, i'd imagine LB is an area Hughes will look to strengthen anyway.

Cant see Eisa getting one either. He's just unfortunately never fit, even when he came back in the side he was exactly a threat.

Eisa no chance, Gilly , even in L1 as a back up squad player. Yes agree with Cook, Stubbs and Clayton.

I think we have to try to bring the age profile of the squad down a little. I would certainly offer Cook a contract (who will be 33 in October) and Gilliead. But I wouldn’t be looking to offer Clayton a Contract. Perhaps slightly younger but I would let Ridehalgh go. Hughes has still got Foulds on Contract and he brought in Bola.

Yes I do agree tbh, we have only seen glimpses of Eisa and he is obviously injury prone, move him on. Just hope MH feels the same!

Agree with what most people on here have said already but I'd also consider re-contracting Doyle in his combined player/coach role. It saves a wage vs. having a 2nd/3rd choice keeper plus a separate goalie coach.

These are the only ones I'd offer new contracts, regardless of what league we are in.
    • 3. Liam Ridehalgh offer 1 year deal as back up (I don't see Foulds returning and think he will sign for Harrogate permanently in the summer).
    • 9. Andy Cook Offer 2 year deal and give him the keys to the city.
    • 11. Alex Gilliead Can't actually believe I'm saying this but offer 18mth/2 Yr deal.
    • 13. Colin Doyle offer new deal in a coaching role only and bring in new back up keeper.

Clayton is a no brainer to re-sign, for me, even if we go up. He may not start that many games but his calm experience and ability to take control makes him an ideal sub and cover for injuries.

Central midfield needs an upgrade in the summer. If we offer new deals to Gilliead and Clayton with having Smallwood, East and Osadebe already under contract, we don't have much wriggle room.

I'm not so sure with Clayton especially if we go up. I think we were starting to see the signs that his legs were going a bit. Happy to be proved wrong but I think he would be a risky one

We’ve done ‘ok’ this season. Even if we do go up, we’ve not exactly romped the league.
We’ve done ok at the back, got a decent keeper, a very good goal scorer.
The weaker areas for me have absolutely been in the midfield areas.
As others have pointed out - East, Osadebe and Smallwood are under contract.
If we re signed Gilliead and Clayton we’re left with the five midfielders that on the whole have flattered to deceive for large parts of the season - and offered little in terms of support for the forward players.
Surely we need to be looking to improve the midfield areas beyond what we have now?

I see Clayton as like Ravenhill back when we went up last time. Ravenhill was a good rotational option for Doyle or Jones if they needed a refresher in midfield, smart little passes, knew when to win a foul, knew when to take a yellow.

Since we have moved back to the 4231 and we now have more a free flowing play, its certainly better play to watch than the diamond was, that even if Clayton was fit i doubt he'd be starting ahead of Smallwood and Gilliead at the minute, however he'd probably come on most games. Last time we ended up sticking with guys like Ravenhill, Connell, Thompson when we went up, and none really ended up making the team once we upgraded positions, and i think the same would happen if Clayton went up to L1. We might think he'd be an option, but by January he'd probably be looking for first team football.

Send East out on loan. Osadebe is a tough one as not really had a chance. He is a utility man anyway and can be used in a few positions as cover.

Gilliead, Smallwood, Clayton plus 2 more. That will do. If we improve on the ones we have and Gilliead and Clayton are squad members I will be satisfied with that.

    Would agree with that.
That said, if Gilliead played at the levels he has shown in recent weeks I’d be happier.
Not sure if the players have raised their levels or if the tactics have changed to a more attacking mindset.

Think it's the move to a tactic that suits more players that's helped. We played with a lot more fluidity now, look at that first goal on Monday for example.

The diamond helped us sure up the midfield when they weren't on form, and grind out a few draws in the process. But playing 3 CMs deep, playing Costelloe not really up front, not really out wide, not really as a 10 wasn't helping anyone. We never looked like we were controlling a game using the diamond, where as the 4231 we have moved back to suits far more of our attacking minded players and gives Gilly and Smallwood a bit more room to find nice passes whilst keeping shape.
