All this levelling up, high wage, high skill economy is absolute garbage...unless what happens is a massive reduction in inequality at the same time.

Otherwise, all other things being equal, we will get rampant inflation.

However, as soon as there is a suggestion of a redistribution of income to reduce inequality the press start screaming about communism and no serious debate can be held.

Inflation will hit the poorest in society the hardest, it always does.

I'm annoyed. I went to see my parents yesterday, in their eighties, worried about putting their heating on because of the increase in their bills. The winter fuel payment will dent that a bit, but not much. Without doubt, old people will die this winter because they cannot afford to heat their homes. That is what inequality does.

I have a very cynical view towards the two main parties. Under their current leaderships (and recent ones!), neither are sufficiently competent to lead our country and yet most people in the country don't share that view. They have been taken in in by a conveyor belt of rhetoric and lies provided by the PM - levelling up, build back better, world leading track & trace, get Brexit done, net zero, learning lessons, world class public services, etc etc - but it's just rhetoric with very little substance. And against that flimsy background, that mirage of action, the official opposition can't even land a punch let alone make a dent in the dialogue.

Unforunately and depressingly, I don't see anything which will improve matters in the near future.

Lots of people work their arses off and get rewarded with peanuts. This idea that some people are poor because they aren't working hard enough really boils my p!ss.

Utter bullshit. Ever tried working in a children's home; or an old people's home; or a psych ward; or gone onto Thorpe Edge estate to remove a child from abusive parents; or sectioned a person with acute psychosis - whilst waiting several hours for police and ambulance backup; or sat with an acutely depressed person for hours, trying to persuade them not to kill themself?

    Thought not.

I've done all of the last three many times. And no amount of money would have persuaded me to do any of the first three.

Mollycoddled. You haven't got a clue.

It's only communism if you spend other people's money on state-funded projects that benefit millions of people.
If you just hand it out to all your mates to set up incompetent Covid labs that misdiagnose thousands of cases, or start track and trace companies that don't have the first idea how to do it, it's absolutely fine, apparently. It's the inherent efficiency of the private sector, don't you know?

Wealth is vile. Wealth is selfish. There's people that don't have food and shelter in every part of the UK and all over the world. That's not right.

I wouldn't be against capitalism as such if the system was fair. But, as I was told by an experienced economist a few years back, you can't have both. Capitalism works by screwing the ones at the bottom, for every pound or dollar your investments, pensions etc make for you while you sit in your backsides, someone, or millions of these people, are working their arses off for a pittance to make you that profit.

I have no doubt the furlough scheme was a godsend to many companies, particularly in the hospitality and travel industries, but equally I have no doubt that it was massively abused by companies who didn't need it. I know things had to be done quickly but thousands of companies who thrived during the pandemic also received grants and rate rebates. Free money some described it as.

But without the trades unions and other left of centre campaigners, we'd still be working 12 hour days, six days a week, with virtually no holidays, no sick pay, maternity leave etc or still sending kids up chimneys.

Likewise, we'd never have had an NHS, or decent environmental and H&S standards. These things are never given up freely by businesses - they have to be fought for. And they are invariably opposed by the Tory Party, until they become so accepted as part of civilised life that they wouldn't dare remove them.
You only need to look at the likes of Amazon, Uber, etc to see how mega rich companies exploit their workforce when there is no workforce representation to fight for their rights.

I'm not anti- capitalist. I believe in a mixed economy. Command economies don't work long term, although there are certain tasks that are best performed by the public sector. There have to be incentives for people to invest and turn a reasonable profit. But there also have to be regulations to prevent exploitation and excessive inequality.
We'd have even better living standards if the higher echlons of our society hadn't been on investment strike for several decades - preferring to squirrel away their riches in offshore tax havens rather than pay UK tax on them or reinvest them in our economy. Why do you think the Tory government has always refused to join in with EU initiatives to cut down on tax avoidance? Because most of them, or their spouses, are some of the biggest offenders.

An example of exactly what I'm talking about Hooch. We can spunk £37 billion in a lot of cases with no questions asked as to which politicians mates the money is going to but after all the campaigning by the likes of Rob Burrow, Doddie Weir and our very own Stephen Darby, this pathetic excuse of a government can't find a fraction of that money for funding into the awful disease of MND. I try not to think ot things like this because it makes me really angry.

Problem is you Tony and Hoochy all make valid points. And there is a good argument to encourage getting off your backside and rewarding hard work. But as this track and trace saga has shown we have a government complicit in mass fraud. The same government that would threaten to send the goons round if you so much as missed a tax payment. But then I see a country where food banks usage has gone through the roof and there is a real concern that things like ulitities essential to everyday life such as energy and water are being priced as to make life difficult for the less well off.
I hate the Labour Party but jeez this current Tory lot are a different level of pond life.

Tell that to the probable hundreds of millions who have died of starvation under communism, It is the taxes of capitalism that feeds the poor and treats the sick

All systems work like that. No system in history has worked by screwing the people at the top.
