The PM will know he has a serious problem now. When his handling of this issue is openly criticised by the Mail; when Fraser Nelson of the Telegraph describes the shambolic Govt as acting like one in its dying days and the Spectator lists his many failings on cronyism and sleeze, the PM must recognise that he is already walking the plank. It won't take much more before his own party questions his position. His next step must surely be to counter that and claim that COP26 has been a rip roaring success thanks to him. That is until his bluster is scrutinised by those COP organisations etc who really do understand the issues.
The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner (the one who yesterday a member of the Cabinet said 'Should consider her future' prior to the Govt u-turn) has already started her investigation into how the refurbishment of the No 10 flat was financed. The Govt's attempts to get her removed before she completes her investigation has already backfired. The stupidity of some members of the cabinet is beyond belief even when having to act on their boss' orders

It’s the using of his wife’s death to slime his way out of it that sticks in my craw. All the rest is to be expected.

It was around the 8.15pm mark. I suspect there will be wider coverage of this over the weekend.
The PM's get out of jail card might well be that the opposition won't have a clue on what to do.YungNath, Hoochy-Min, RCarol and 2 others like this. -
The Salaries of MPs pale into insignificance when compared to the public funded BBC " Stars " , they pontificate about people struggling - food banks - UC - minimum wage - child poverty etc . Yet they pay outrageous wages to mediocre presenters IE lineker on over £1.3 m - Zoe ball £1m + - Andrew Marr £ 500k + - Jeremy Vine £500k + , these parasites are even threatening over 75s with debt collectors , yet they complain about MPs with their snouts in the trough , shocking organisation that should be made to self fund and compete in the real world .

Typical tory using his dead wife to excuse himself from treating the rules with utter contempt. If he has such a low opinion of her then what was his opinion of the electorate? begs the question.
Front and foreword was the actions of a desperate tory party who always have the capacity to act without integrity collectively and without flinching. Its an entitlement which can only be born from public schooling.YungNath, Edinmiarse and Offcomedun like this. -

Sigh, the Labour Party are going to do it again aren't they? They're going to miss the point and lose this massive opportunity.
The scandal at the minute isn't the expenses or the technicalities, talking about Johnsons flat or his holiday just pushes it into the future. It's an accusation that is to an extent old news but isn't yet solid enough to make new news.
The scandal is the vote! Focus on the vote and ONLY the vote.
This is the opportunity to drive a wedge down the Conservatives between the ministers who forced the result and the backbenchers who didn't want to vote that way. This is where you can get the Red Wall voters to ask questions on whether their representatives can be trusted to vote in their best interests or even on their own morals and the individuals involved can't defend it.
Talking about Kathryn Stone (somebody none of the public know or care about) or wider sleeze might make things uncomfortable in Westminster but it's not going to get the public engaged because they already think politicians as a whole are sleazy anyway.bantamdave41, Hoochy-Min and RCarol like this. -
However, I recognise that Johnson is a very good campaigner and is great at engaging people where it matters with many, in their hearts. However as a PM, he has to deal with the head rather than the heart, and that's where he falls down. (I'll ignore the sleaze and cronyism and his lack of integrity for this comparison!) The current Labour Party continues to focus on the electorate's heads and Starmer simply has no idea how to engage with the electorate's hearts.
Being realistic, Johnson needs to be looking over his shoulder at his 'friends' behind him on the Conservative benches rather than worrying too much about his opponents on the opposition benches!Bronco, Rogered Tart and Aaron Baker like this. -
Angela Rayner’s opinion of the Tories has been proved to be accurate after all.

To coin a phrase from donald trump (I know, I know) but it’s time to drain the swamp. And by that I don’t just mean MPs but the House of Lords too. If anything this last week or so has taught us they are all the same and we need to get rid of the lot and start again.
It’s full of self centred scum who are only interested in themselves and making their friends/family at our expense. And we keep voting for it! And do nothing! We are so weak in this country when it comes to what we let our politicians get away with.

Other than that though there is absolutely a strong argument that the BBC should be defunded and exist within its own means like every other media platform around the world.trevor and Tony Wilkinson like this.
