And why would Bowyer play his best winger in central midfield?

I meant a midfield three, with Scannell on the right of it.

That's right think he will go with the three strikers and Scannell on the right of a three man midfield

That would be very attack minded ...... Yet once Scannell is committed, our MF would then be weak for a counter attack.
I really don't think playing Scannell alongside the creative Palmer in a MF 3 is the answer, particularly in a 4 3 3 set up.
Would GB risk that for the first competitive match ?

He's still not out wide though. We had a midfield three on Saturday and neither Anderson or Gibson played out wide, they were central.

If we play a 433, the front three will be Donaldson, Vaughan and Scannell.

Hope we don’t play Scannell in a midfield 3, not that I think Bowyer is that daft. He’ll play either Doyle or Scannell as he has in pre season.

I would go 4-4-2 start with Vaughan and Donaldson up front and have Doyle as a substitute to be used, replacing probably Donaldson. Gives more options for midfield and can accommodate some width perhaps with Scannell and Gibson playing the wider roles. There is still enough strength and speed with those two, to either get past and then cross the ball, or run at defenders.

I’m surprised some are suggesting 3 up top and Scannell in midfield. Just cant see it, Bowyer will be happy with a victory by the odd goal and I expect us to keep it tight.

Donaldson, Vaughan up top with Scannell on the wing and Doyle on the bench

Midfield 3 of Palmer, Akpan and Anderson with The unlucky Gibson missing out

I keep harking back to Bowyers comments when we played Coventry away saying that's how he likes to set his teams up pace and power up front and out wide, hence the reason for me why he will accomadate Scannell in his natural widel position.
Well know soon only 4 more sleeps as we used to tell the kids awaiting Santa let's hope its Santa who calls on Saturday and leaves us with 3 points ;).

Based on training this morning, looks like it’s DVD and a back four of mellor, BRE, AOC and Henley.

I agree that would provide more balance and would be the preferred way to go. Just think the way he’s used Doyle vs Bolton (apparently) and Rochdale he may just get the nod.

In theory, if he was performing to how he should you would also argue Akpan should be in the three CMs alongside Palmer and Anderson, so cover the potential of counter attack as you mention.

Excited to see what he goes for. Isn’t it nice to feel like we actually have options for once??!

There were 2 sessions going on. One was based on defensive shape, with the back 4 described above and OD as GK. scannell, Devine, longridge and French were crossing the ball in for the defensive line to deal with. The other session involved DVD as well as Gibson and Palmer working on attacking play

Do any of our older fans remember the last time (I think) we played Cambridge at home on the opening day? 77/78 season, we'd been promoted the previous season, we won 4-0 and I think all City fans(my 11 year old self included) thought that the good times were gonna keep coming..
We ended up going straight back to where we belonged to div 4
So I hope people don't start getting all dramatic on social media if we lose or getting carried away if we win comfortably. It's a long season. Up the Bantams!!

Yes, I agree Broncs, and he's mentioned pace a few times but then it puzzles me that we haven't brought another winger in but maybe he's still looking or hoping for a Gilliead type loan maybe? Who knows! I do trust that he has a plan though.

Remember it well, at the end of the season we went down and Cambridge United went up. Its not an unusual to get strange results in the first few games of each season, probably more so than later in the season, as teams settle down.

There have probably been few stranger opening day results than Norwich City 1-7 Colchester United; of course Norwich went on to be champions that season.
