Didnt like the attitude from this team today, too many must have felt they were too good for L2 and it showed, as mentioned earlier by @Bantamsteve@Bantamsteve 22 shots but only 3 on target.
Doyle was just swinging and missing all day.

Special mention to Everton, he did look a player worth watching.
Bowyer needs some more quality otherwise the fans are being sold a pup.

Well that was an awful game. It's beyond me why Bowyer wants to play 4-3-3 with these players. That system demands players with great pace, skill, flexibility and vision, something only available in the higher divisions. Today we had no creativity whatsoever and had no chances to speak of. The midfield three were terrible and didn't seem to have any idea how they were supposed to play. Doyle was also terrible and why he's asked to play a role he is completely
incapable of playing is bizarre. Solid enough at the back but Henley was very poor and how he was picked ahead of Longridge or Riley I don't know. Richards- Everton is a very willing lad but his lack of pace and skill will cost us in some games. Mellor again was very willing but looked like a carthorse at times. Hard to judge the front two as they had so little to work with but neither suggested he will terrify defences in this division. Early days for sure but I was bored witless this afternoon and there are some alarm bells starting to be heard.

I was trying the positive thinking bit last season even tried the happy clapping bit and look what happened so maybe give it a miss this time. Yes the seasons only 90 minutes old but we had the same old problems shots actually on target admittedly the defence looked stronger but do remember the oppositions standing last season early days but the nightmares from last season are still fresh in the mind a lot of teams will be hard to break down this season but that's what's sets the goods sides from the also rans

I’m sorry but that is just bollocks. We don’t need myths like this perpetuating. There was nothing wrong with the application of the players. There were no prima donnas. We tried hard but Cambs, to their credit, were tough to break down. The set up wasn’t quite right but give the players credit where it is due. Anderson and Gibson were flying into tackles and the strikers did their best with non existent service from midfield. The balance wasn’t quite there going forward but defensively we looked much more solid.

Steady on mate, you're in danger of being labelled a happy clapper.

    Ha ha.

I wasn’t comfortable watching us going forward - it didn’t quite click - but people are spouting nonsense to say the players strutted about like too big for League 2.

Donaldson and Vaughan put themselves about but had little service if anyone is being truthful.

Yep agree with all of that, great summary. If a club want Doyle he can go for me. His job was to collect the ball in midfield and drive forwards, yea right. I have yet to see what he is actually good at. I thought both Donaldson and Vaughan looked shattered, we can’t have this, they worked their arses off going back and filling in for a very weak midfield. Palmer was the only one who performed well enough for me. I thought defensively we looked solid, including the infamous Mr. O’Connell.

I am sorry but we are desperate for another two midfielders, and another striker if we can. Every team are going to come with the mindset of Cambridge defend really well we get a point, if we are lucky we might get a goal, we as a team better get used to it, there are no givens.

Disappointed, but not entirely surprised. Gelling takes time.

Cambridge won't be on their own being hard to break down this is L2 that's how teams play its up to us being the title favourites to break them down today didn't show much encouragement we were capable of doing so. The defence did look much improved but untested put them up against a well organized free scoring attack before you come to any conclusions

Nope, it is your reply that is bollocks as no myths are being spread just a poor outing for the first game, as i said earlier 22 shots but only 3 on target so if there is non existant service from midfield where did all the half chances come from?
Defence looked better agreed, but City were up against a team struggling to stay up last year.

I agree but he doesn't need one if he continues with a 4-3-3 formation, I bet Bowyer doesn't go with that fornation next Saturday at Grimsby or should I say I hope he doesn't.

You agreed with an earlier poster that some of City’s players think they are too big for League Two? Something along those lines? Which players did you have in mind?

A comment like that is for players like Payne last season, after the loan extension, when not tracking back when the opposition were in possession.

What examples can you give me from today?

Donaldson busted a gut to get on the end of several chances - hardly not applying himself.

Vaughan fed off scraps and put in a shift. Hit bar with good improvisation after Gibson dinked him in.

Scannell was a sub and tried to impact game when Cambs were down to 10 men and, like so many 10-men sides do, we couldn’t break them down.

Doyle was shit. But was that down to lack of effort? I saw him make several runs in behind the defence that came to nothing. But the intent was there. He had a few shots too. They were crap, like. Yes, they swung everywhere. But that wasnt a lad disinterested. That was a player out of form who is desperate to score to get the crowd off his back.

I don’t think there are any others in that side with reputations big enough to be called prima donnas.

True Wilsden, the usual suspects are already on here throwing their toys out of the pram after just 1 match - I would like to say unbelievable but sadly its no surprise. Yes of course we should have beaten Cambridge but some of the negativity on here is frankly laughable - we do have some of the biggest whingers! GB KNOWS we need to add to the team, we all do, but its the FIRST game of the season. A number of teams in our division have had results we, and they, did not expect today.
Just had a chat with someone who knows a bit about our activity - there are a lot of things going on behind the scenes so to those who are in despair tonight, just try to keep the faith for a little longer

Can't agree there you don't win games without scoring in any league we will have to face more attacking teams both home and away see how they perform then

Nope. Bowyer is naive if he expected otherwise.

But to suggest the players didn’t apply themselves is nonsense. The set up wasn’t quite right today and some of the men in that XI probably aren’t the right men for us (looking at CM and Doyle in a front three) But our shortcomings weren’t down to a lack of desire as suggested earlier in this thread.
