Very few teams play two out & out wingers these days. It's a high risk strategy defensively. Scannell on the right plus an overlapping left back ought to do the job.
If Scannell gets double marked that should create space and opportunities down the middle, providing we have sufficient creativity there. The problem last season was that once teams nullified Payne we had no option to go wide and no other creativity.

Playing the system today relies on full backs providing the width and the pace to get balls into the box after a slow start I thought Mellor did it beautifuly up to half time. Henley for me was poor don’t think he got a cross In all match. Second half Mellor was hardly able to get forward at all and that’s when Scannell should have come on and maybe wood for Gibson. A natural leftfooter.

I didnt see anything today that convinces me we will get promotion this season - hugely disappointing

Did we string more than two passes together , and some of the passing was shocking

We looked every bit an average league 2 side

But I wasn't ''happy'' as you put it with the performance today. I merely stated that questioning the manager after the first game of the season is ludicrous and is representative of the attitudes of Beeston supporters and feels like the ''sack the manager' mentality is growing stronger within our fan base, it does absolutely nothing for us, hence when we sat tight with Parky during his horrific streak we eventually reaped the rewards.. I do agree we need additions and I'm sure GB is knocking onJR/SRs door.

It shouldn’t even be an option, i don’t want to see square pegs in round holes, i’ve had enough of that for 18 months.

So game 1 is done and the result - although not a disaster - did not meet many people's expectations - my own included. Tinge of dissapointmnet? Absolutely, but it was also far from complete panic stations!

I think many need to pause for a second and take a step back and not let the emotion of this performance run away with them. The first game is not a true indicator of how well a team is likely to perform over the season so don't look too deeply into it.

A balanced judgement is needed right now. We start the season on the back of relegation with many of the underachievers still on the books. However, Bowyer is beginning to mould the squad in his own vision but he admits it is not there yet. We need to remain mindful of this. No matter how underwhelming Saturday was it was still a solid performance. The speed of play was lacking and we were too narrow - especially against 10 men. However, we never looked troubled. Yes the bench looked weak but there is still time to bring a couple more in and there are those out injured to come back.

We will be stronger both from a squad perspective and from the experience. This is likely to be how a lot of teams are going to set up against us, especially at Valley Parade. Hopefully Bowyer and the players have learnt a lot from this.

Problem with doing that is, though it’s great for the first few games, teams will quickly find us out. Look what happened with Jack Payne when it was discovered by opposition teams that he was the focal point of our attacks. Two players on him all game and we resort to hoofball up to Doyle (groan).

Although I called Gibson out on his Hollywood passing on Saturday, having someone who can switch the play to either wing, is a great benefit. IF there’s two wingers on the pitch.

Defenders in this league aren’t the most mobile or position savvy. Stretching the play by using both wings either to get crosses in, or pulling fullbacks out of position is a great weapon.

442 for me all day long. Bringing in another winger and centre mid is a must.

Fair enough. You’re both wrong then :D

That said, the fact Bowyer was putting square pegs in round holes on the opening day of the season suggests the squad is far from ready, and not just on paper ;)

Most of the players played the system under the manager at Bury last season so didn’t need much time to gel.

I am not sure where Doyle’s best position his. He can’t play loan centre forward, number 10 role or up front with a partner. He can take penalties, but that seem to be all. If the opportunity arose I would sell him and get a number 10 role person with pace. For me on Saturday he was a passenger.

All systems work, providing you have quality and 'togetherness'.
A lack of 'togetherness' last campaign is why we are in Lge 2 this season.

This season it appears we lack quality. GB has shored up the back and the front. Yet having seen the last of Payne, Butterfield, L O'B and Wright ............ He's replaced them with ............ Just Palmer, in midfield ?

Here's hoping Herr Rupp is feeling generous, this August ?

Haven't read any other replies, so sorry if this has been asked previously.
Bu what the fcuk does Anderson bring to the party.
He neither want's the ball or goes looking for it. Doesn't/can't tackle.
I honestly believe I had more influence in that game sat on my 'arris on my seat than him.
Not fan of Devine, but within two minutes of his arrival he'd managed to tackle, make a pass and a shot which pissed on anything Anderson had done in the previous hour

And based on the first game of Norwich’s season when they got pumped 7-1 they should have gone down, but you can’t throw promotion/relegation predictions around on one game. Most people who understand the game will tell you you don’t get a clear picture until 10/12 games in there’s a reason for it. And he certainly wasn’t right about us not stringing two passes together if we didn’t it’s a miracle we had 22 shots and over 60% possession.:x3::joy:

But he didn’t say we won’t improve, just as Norwich did. But based on today, we won’t be anywhere near. That’s fair.

Did he say we didn’t put 2 passes together or did he ask the question? The passing at times was very poor. Doyle got hammered for falling over but on more than one occasion it was because it was played behind him or to the opposite side to where he was expecting it, putting him off balance.

Of course we can’t judge until after 10games. We certainly can’t judge until the window closes. But we should be allowed to form an opinion or we may as well close down the forum until the end of September...!

I think Cambridge as I would expect from a calderwood team defended very well over the years we have struggled at VP with teams that pack midfield and defence and there will be many more matches like this one before the season ends. We have to find away through these matches better. More width and pace is needed. On the plus side I don’t think we will concede many goals this season. And Vaughan and Donaldson should score a few

Nothing wrong with opinions I’m offering mine aren’t I? There’s just a lot of ott comments tonight. Apparently Bowyers a poor manager now if you go on one of the comments a few moments ago. Although the same poster has called every manager we’ve had poor since C & B but he’s not the only one. He asked the question but what a strange question to ask if that’s not what you’re thinking.

Anyway bored of going in circles I give up I’ll keep my laughing at some of the nonsense to myself. Funnily enough your criticisms are actually balanced but you’re defending people who are going ott and way off the handle

I think a lot of people expected us to win, nothing wrong with that given the opposition (as you point out). However, it must have also been expected that we may be a little slow out of the blocks this season and things may not click immediately. I expected a scrappy 1-0 win today and we almost got that with the Vaughan effort against the bar. If that had gone in, I think most people would have said the same things that were saying now (we need a CM, we need a winger, Doyle isn’t best suited to the deep lying forward role, etc).

So 0-0 or 1-0 I don’t see a big difference, there are still a few gaps in the squad that need addressing and there are still some tactical tweaks that may need to be made.

Didn’t know I’ll just stick with the Sheffield United example from 16/17, Newcastle from the same year, Luton last year or even looking at results yesterday teams expected to be up there in their leagues such as Fulham, Cardiff, Sunderland, Peterborough all suffering worse results than us, hope that is enough
