And a poor central midfield, Palmer and one of the others we have would be over ran at will.

Luton played a narrow diamond for the last two years and they didn’t do to badly, with their full backs providing the width. Mellor did it at times on Saturday in the first half, but there were times when both full had so much space but often weren’t found. It looked like a team still learning a new system to me and trying to gel. Changing tactic now won’t help. We went 4-4-2 last 15 on Saturday and all it didn’t was allow 10 man Cambridge more time on the ball, and we still didn’t look like scoring.

I would have thought just watching the matchit was obvious that width was needed. No room for the forward to move. Of course it should be the full back who provide it in the system we played and Mellor did first half but if they can’t get forward we are stifled as were Saturday second half

It's just your personal preference. It's not necessary.

We dominated without width and Vaughan should have scored a header, not accounting for his overhead kick.

Different game if those go in.

Nothing to do with width, imo, or there would only be one formation in football.

The only time we looked dangerous at all on Saturday was the last part of the first half with Mellor down the right providing width and the last five ten minutes with Scannell the rest of the time we were just running headlong into a Brick wall of defenders. I am not saying the system can’t work it obviously can. But it requires the full back getting forward and a proper number 10 to link midfield with the forwards similar to what Clarke used to do

I'm not putting Scannell in either Beagrie or Summerbee's bracket but neither of those two had genuine pace and we didn't do to bad with their style of wing play.

I agree about the forward situation, Doyle not suitable for us unfortunately.

I'll be happier when McCartan replaces him.

Agree, but we have two forwards who look to get on the end of balls put into the box. If we had this opportunity on either wing, I’d hope they’d have a field day. Donaldson is adept at knocking the ball down, and half his game would be wasted if it’s a number ten feeding him to feet.
I’m not saying 442 is the only way forward, but it would go a long way to addressing the problems we had last season.
Doyle out, left winger in, or bring in a proper number ten, who can run into space D&V create for him by operating as a traditional front two.

Agree. Isnt that what pre season is for, and we brought in 9 of the new signings in before pre season training began

Someone has to hit the ground running, so why not us?

Nobody knows yet the quality of the teams respective clubs played on Saturday Cambridge might be up there in May and a point won’t seem to bad

Most of the players played the system under the manager at Bury last season so didn’t need much time to gel.

If he's ever fit to play for us McCartan may well do a decent job. I would hazard a guess that the injury situation lingers for a long while and we don't see much of him though. One of the biggest let downs of a signing in recent history.

I am not sure where Doyle’s best position his. He can’t play loan centre forward, number 10 role or up front with a partner. He can take penalties, but that seem to be all. If the opportunity arose I would sell him and get a number 10 role person with pace. For me on Saturday he was a passenger.

Nope, if we're gonna play a formation with a No.10, lets use the guy who plays as a No.10 We might finally see the best of Mccartan then. Doyle's best position for me is at the top of the transfer list.

Neither mate. We are not suited to play 4-3-3

Do you know under Pep Man City have spent 200m on full backs. Shocking isn't it? Man City finance fair play my ar&e.
Anyway the point about Man City is that to play 4-3-3 you need more than 3 forwards hence why Pep keeps improving on his full backs. I don't think we've the skill set to play it.

McCartan isn't good mate. I would rather you lace your boots and play for us.

Yes he did so well in that No 10 position we loaned him out to Lincoln for the season, you've made my point @YungNath@YungNath highlighted above, IE my last throw of the dice :(.
